Anyone ever remove an automatic trans 42rle? Need to change my wife's 03 liberty trans found fine shiney metal in the oil. It crap out few weeks ago only gear working is low even reverse is out. I can pick up a remanufacture trans for about $950. I was looking at the trans and I can get to all the bolts around the bell housing but is there one on the top of the bell housing? 118,000 miles you would think it should last longer than that. I changed the oil every 30,000 miles.

This comes high in the category of shop jobs.
A trans is darn heavy and you need a specialized lift to handle it safely. Secondly some of them can be real tricky to mate correctly with the engine. Sure it can be done at home...if you have the right tools, equipment and experience....and that's a heck of an "if".

This is one that needs to go to the shop.

You will need a 48"+ long extension for the upper 2 bellhousing bolts.Otherwise no special tools are needed.A tranny jack would be handy but not really needed since a regular jack will work.Separate the t-case from the trans 1st,makes it easier and lighter. No lift needed either.
