Post subject:  Surco Safari Roof basket

Well I decided to get this basket http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... toview=sku, although I havent ordered it yet. For the people who own one, how do you like it? does it make alot of noise going down the road? does it create alot of drag?

And also what bracket or part # or whatever would be used to mount lights on the basket?

Im still debating on what basket I should get....

I have one on top of my Libby and I luv it. Looks cool 8)

It gives me a place to put the Hella500's and any cargo I wish to carry. Since taking the pic above I've mounted my spare tire in the basket too. I don't notice any increase in wind nois or a drop in my MPG. I imagine there is some but I haven't noticed a grerat problem.

What he said.... very nice wheels, I never saw these on the KJ.

What are the offsets on those and how is the fitment ie. any rubbing?

The roof basket already had holes drilled in it for the lamps. I've run the wiring up the side of the windshield frame rather than drilling holes in the roof. The roof basket is held onto the stock roof rack with u-bolts from a hardware store. When I return home later this week I can take closeup pictures of the lamp and roof basket mounts and post them here.

The wheels are actually stock Grand Cherokee rims that I picked up recently. Yesterday I discovered that the 245/75R16 tires are occassional rubbing the pinch weld inside the front fender wheel well. Time to pound them down :D

My lift is a OTT lift consisting of spacers so my lift actually only raised my Libby 2.5". I have a friend of mine who is running the identical tires on his Libby but with a Frankenlift which actually raised my Libby 3", no pinch weld rubbing on his Libby (yet).

Okay, I've got some pics;

The u-bolts are 1 3/8" wide and about 3" long.

Here's where I ran the wiring;

I ran my CB antenna cable the same route up the passenger side.

did those cross rails come with the basket or did you have to buy them somewhere?

The basket comes with those cross bars. They support and structure the rack. If you buy the 45" X 50" rack you can use those bars to mount the rack. If you buy the thinner rack (40" X 50") then you cannot.

Yeah Im thinking about it too. I really need a safari rack and I wish I could make a widow or this one but these darn renegade rails. Anyone know if the surco can work with the renegade rails? or if there is a home depot fix to make it work?

My Surco roof basket measures 45" wide by 50" long.

I've since removed the roof basket because;

#1 I didn't really need the extra cargo area
#2 with the four Hella lamps & a spare tire in it my gas mileage sucked
#3 the Hella lamps were too high to be highway legal

Maybe I'll put it on the YJ's hardtop and bolt a shovel & a Hi-Lift to it.
