| Post subject: | Bad Main Rear Seal |
So I went in for my oil change (get it free from the dealer), I told them I saw some oil on the bottom of my oil pan and asked them to look around when they were under there. Well the mechanic came a got me, showed me the problem and apparently the gasket for the Rear Main "?" is bad. I don't know what the rear main is, but it's the gasket on the back of the oil pan. Dealer quoted about $500 bucks (I have to pay a $200 deductible on warranty.) Anyone change one of these gaskets and it is as hard as they're trying to tell me. |

Well if the oil pans has to come off it will cost way more then $500 since the engine needs to be pulled or the cradle dropped to take the oil pan off.A rear main is not real hard to do put the trans and/or t-case must be dropped. |

I'm pretty sure the engine wouldn't need to be pulled, but they were saying the same thing you are, the t-case has to be pulled to get access to the gasket it's self. I guess this is one I better go rake my money tree and take one in the rear. |

Not sure on the 05, but on my 02 the Crank Shaft Positioning Sensor is on the lower passenger side of the engine block, if the O- ring goes bad on it, small amounts of oil will leak and run down between the block and the oil pan, simulating a rear crank seal leak, take a peek at it. |

Yes it is hard unless you are a mechanic with the right tools. The rear main is the gasket between your engine and your transmission. $200 is cheap, I would get it done. |

The seal it self is super easy to replace. It is getting the T-case out of the way is not so fun... but look above it all and make it is not something esle first |

Get some leak detection dye and pour in your oil,drive for a few days and breakout the black light/UV light and yellow goggles and find your leak. Most shops can do this and charge about $20-$40 for the service,those dyes and lights are not cheap. |

I have to take it back into the dealer today to get it "officially" inspected, they'll took to make sure what it is, I don't have to pay for the inspection to hey. The only thing that gets me is, this is gonna push my lift back about another month, to bad we have to eat and pay bills right? Thanks for the help too guys. |
