Ok well I just had my first regulator go on my 06 Renegade, and of course it is out of warranty! I have been reading all the posts about this and just wanted to get the updated info.

The dealer quoted me $400, $200 for the regulator, and $200 for labor. he said it does not include the glass and I was just wondering if he was trying to pawn off a old regulator or if that is all I need to replace.

Oh yea it was built Oct 2005

I was wondering if anyone has used the aftermarket fixes, and how the fix with the wire was working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,
Marc

Mine went today as well, DS rear. Since I didn't want to look like I was from the Western Slope, I elected to hold the window up with a clamp on the track rather the taping it from the outside.

I've read that the whole glass needs to be replaced and whatnot and it costs $500 for the part plus labor plus re-tinting the glass. If the dealer offers a $400 out the door solution, I might be interested. I have an appt for Monday I already set for issues unrelated to this issue so I'll ask.

I was on here looking for a how to removal post and saw yours up here....weird.

I got all 4 of mine replaced for a little over 350 parts 250 labor

labor book only has like 0.3 per rear window

that dealer is both over charging you for the regulator and screwing you on the labor

i'd understand if it was that expensive for the window replacement and all

but just for the regulator itself + R&R? Pfft.

I think the issue is that Chrysler has given up on the regulator thing and went a completely new direction. The current regulators will keep on breaking and eventually the world will run out of them.

I have no problem replacing the regulator if I can find one cheap on eBay or something but I also know it's just delaying the inevitable. I feel fortunate that this is my only problem, other had much worse.

I wouldn't trust the new "fixed" regulators. They changed the mouunting points on the glass but didn't fix the true problem piece.

JL: depending on your build date, there is a fix out there for your window... http://www.steigerperformance.com/products/sp13001.html

If yours was built after 03/06 then there is no kit just yet. I have some parts in line at a machinists place to be made to try and fix this and remedy it once and for all.

And here I thought you were posting in regards to my Western Slope comment. If nothing else, the install guide is valuable in getting the old regulator out.

Thanks

I had the KJ at the dealer today for various maintenance issues and I asked them for a quote on the rear window. It would be $293 P&L, no window replacement needed. The service writer says only certain build dates come up as window replacement.

Yea mine was built in Oct of 05 so it is covered by the stieger perfomance replacement so I am going to try that, it looks like a quality product. I will let you all know how it goes!!

you can buy a $2.00 roll of wire and have enough to fix quite a few regulators. Mine is still working by the way with no problems

Interesting read but he says they reused the same junk regulators in the KJ as in the XJ. If this is true then how come the regulators in the early KJs are better? I thought the earlier one's seem to do better. I've yet to have a regulator issue on my 02.

yea apparently somethings different between the 02's and even the early 03's

i had 2 of mine go out at the same time, it seemed to be temp change related, my jeep had been sittin in the sun in a parking lot, i went to go to the post office, rolled the windows down to let the sweltering heat out (was the hottest day we'd had thus far this year after a long stream of rather cold days) when i rolled my window back up both popped and one started falling

same day the front two started making cracking noises

somethins definitely different and i think some just get lucky or dont live where the environment that may cause them to go quicker is easier on them

Ok well I finished the install of the stieger performance replacement part yesterday and it went perfectly!! It is a great part!!! It went right on, and now the window operates quiter and smoother!!

I ordered both sides from him and am going to change the right rear window tomarow before it breaks! My OEM part was broken in two spots so it was ready to break! so now I am just going to do a preemptive replacement on the other side.

Hopefully he gets the front window replacement soon before the stock ones break there.

Good deal KhakiRenegade, allways better to fix the problem than to replace it.
Thanks for the follow up.

can we add that steiger link to some replacement parts list thread sticky? I'd hate to have to be someone to look for that link through the 50-200 window regulator threads around here ;)

hey all,

I have replaced 7 (SEVEN) of the window regulators! 4 were under warranty so I just made Chrysler eat them because it's their worthless design. After it went out of warranty and Chrysler wouldn't stand behind their product defect, I pulled my own (you can find full directions on the web, some with pictures although it isn't that hard), I called a local mechanic I use, he was able to get me the regulator for < $50 cost vs the $200 the dealer quoted me. After 3 of these, I am now able to pull the reg in < 30 minutes and when I drive over to get the part, he installs in less than 30 min, < $100 total installed with part and tax. Call around to your fav local mechanic, don't waste your time with the dealer. Of course, I hadn't considered wiring them up, that would work too!

another bonus, I have done the same thing for my fuel filter on the CRD. The dealer tries to stick you with the whole assembly, when all you need is the filter. Sheesh, maybe they'll be better as FIAT...
