Post subject:  Lower Control Arm Bushings?

Anybody ever replace their lower control arm bushings? I need to do it and I'm trying to decide whether or not to DIY it. My local alignment shop told me he couldn't do it and that the dealer would have to due to a special tool required.

Just thought I'd ask before I decide...

Thanks!

Cool, thanks for the link. Guess I'll be putting it off for awhile longer and buying new LCA's.

Are you talking about the front or rear. Either one, I would probably be better to replace the whole unit.

Front.

And I'm hoping tjkj chimes in here because I know he's done it...is it just a matter of unbolting the old ones and bolting in the new ones (LCA's)? Don't they use special keyed bolts that adjust the alignment?

I done it myself a little while back. It's kinda tricky setting them up in the press, but other than that no biggie. Just be sure you have the arm level while pressing them out or it may become a projectile. Also be sure to mark the alignment keys on the bolts so you get it back to the previous setting. Other than a press there are no special tools required. I'm gonna be doing the pass side wheel bearing and rear control arm bushings next week.

2x what WV Jay says.

fyi, the special tool consists of a receiving cup (4 inch tall cylinder) with a a quarter of the lip cut down about a 1/4 to provide relief for where the control are attaches to the bushing section. You can easily make a tool from a section of pipe with inside diameter larger than the bushing - just grind a section of the lip off so the cup sits straight.

Can you post a pick of the receeiving cup? I can't quite picture the lip cut down.

I really need to do mine, but since I've been unemployed for 4 months :( :( :( I need to do it as cheap as possible.
