Post subject:  KJs oil pressure?

I've posted this on a couple other forums and haven't really gotten a solid answer. Ok so i finally installed my Auto Meter oil pressure and Voltage gauges. Now i notice something that i don't know if i should be alarmed about? Per specifications, I know the MINIMUM oil pressure is 4 psi and there is a rather LARGE window at 3000 RPMs. 25-110 psi  Now here is what my KJ is at. At normal operating temp @ 600 RPMs Please note that i did an oil change at the same time of install w/ full synthetic 5w 30. Should i worrie? At 2100 Rpms or so it will climb to about 75-80psi as well. Sorry for the crappy picture, but you get the idea. Oh its a 2004 3.7L

So now with that said and you know what i'm running at operating temp/idle.... Here is a pic when i started the KJ this morning/ cold temps:eek::eek::eek: Image

Just seems to me i'm gonna blow the seals out of it??? Runs GREAT though.
BTW i have 80,500 miles on it.

Looks normal to me. Just remember that the oil has a higher viscosity when cold. That is why the pressure it higher

3.7 oil pressure Curb idle 4lbs , 3000 rpm 25-80.

I thought the curb idle MIN. was 4? Meaning less then 4 the light comes on. So far one says good and i'm guessing you say no good? What would be the cause of this? Bad sender, Bad gauge? What should i really be worried about here? Or should i?

I'd only worry if it reads zero or a low reading at a higher RPM. If that's the case, then you have low oil.

Am i the only one here who has ever done this???? I find that hard to believe... Could someone point me in the right direction for solid answers/ numbers. No offense to those that helped really. If i'm suppose to be running 4-8 at curb idle, and i'm actually at 25psi.  That doesn't seem to odd to anyone??? Not to mention running at 75 psi on cold start???

If the gauge indicates the high oil pressure this could mean:

* The engine oil pressure sender has failed (common)
* The engine oil pump
could have a stuck pressure relieve valve

Does the KJ have a pressure relieve valve????

To clarify my earlier post 3.7 4lbs min. 3,000 rpm 25lb to 80lb, if you fall lower than 4lb at idle you have a problem. If you read 25lb to 80 in the rpm range above you are good. These numbers are right from the FSM. Also keep in mind that oil viscosity changes with temperature. The numbers stated are at operating temp.

Would the oil filter have anything to do with the pressure? I used a Purolator oil filter. When i changed the oil i used Castol edge 5w 30. I have read that it could be a crappy filter and cause it to be hi. I also noticed today while driving it in the WARM UP phase. I come really close to 100 psi    REALLY!!!! Then drops down to 75 or so at a stop light. Once its warm, idle at 25psi. Back up to 75+ on the highway. Looking at getting a mechanical oil pressure test gauge to maybe get a exact reading.

Oil pressure readings are somewhat decieving. Don't regard these readings as Lb/square inch(like a tyre).
Don't worry about exploding the engine from too high a pressure. After all your dipstick is not airtight. Any over pressure will result in oil flowing out of the dip-stick tube.

:? is this suppose to be a joke?

I don't know that I can answer your question, but hopefully can put your mind at ease a bit. Your oil pressure will vary greatly depending on outside temp, engine temp, rpm's, oil weight and probably your filter.....at least those are the factors you can change or easily observe. As has been previously stated, your reading are within all the values stated in the FSM.

I had an '84 Bronco that after I installed a mechanical oil pressure gage, decided to run 20w-50 oil in the summer because with the 10w-30 or 40, the idle pressure would drop down to 8 psi (vs. 20psi with the heavier oil) after getting off the highway. However when the engine was cold, I would have higher pressures, I believe it started out around 60 psi I would drop from there as the temp climbed at idle.

Thanks for all the help! I have actually spoke to the master tech over at the dealer by the house and he also said my curb idle could very well be at 25-40 psi. Even they didn't have a exact number to give me. Just as long as it doesn't get below 4psi i should be fine. Again thanks for all the input.
