10 hrs from home on our way back from C0 my baby loses power and gives us a p0304. We nurse it back to salina,ks and get the bad news-no compression in cylinder 4. Thinking the head needs to come off we head to rent a car to get home. The dealer then calls us and said he took the valve cover off and we have a broken spring but the cylinder holds compression. Bad news part won't be in until mon and service is closed on sat.

We get back to the dealer to grab our bags n stay for the weekend when the manager says that they have overnighted the part and the tech will come in and fix it for us. So it is noon on sat and we r back on the road. We cannot say enough about Marshall Jeep dealer. They bent over backwards and went the extra mile. I wish all jeep dealers were like this.

Hoping we make it home with no other problems since it seems these springs are a prob. I was wondering if anyone else with this problem had their other springs break or if this is just a fluke.

There have been other instances. ThunderbirdJunkie's KJ is at 135k so he knows that the threat is very real and likely...he should get some new valvesprings.

Off topic note...where in NW MS are ya? ThunderbirdJunkie is still rocking DeSoto County plates.

how much did the repair cost and would these springs be considered a preventative maintenance item for a 100k+ KJ? ( just building a to do list)

I am running into this problem my self. Getting a P0300 and run lick KRAPP at times then it will throw a P0300 - 05-06 then run like KRAPP again. when KJ is turned off then back on it runs fine.
I have tryed everything except valve springs.

how much was the repair? I might try that next

My KJ is a CRD and I've never tried this but a broken valve spring is not beyond the advanced home mechanic  The procedure is to pressurize the cylinder using a special adaptor or making one out of a spark plug and quick connect air fitting.
Put the piston at TDC with both valves closed. The compressed air holds the valve closed while a spring compressor is used to remove the keepers.
Again I've only read about and have not needed it myself :D

Total bill was $299. Here's the breakdown - $2.76 for the spring - $approx $40 for new plugs, $211 for 2 hours labor, $20 something for the overnight shipping charge- we think and then tax.

We didn't feel it was out of line considering we think it took them over 2 hours and the tech came in when he wasn't supposed to and they just did everything they could to make it bearable for us.

About the spring, not sure if it would be considered preventative. Looking on the net soemtimes this happens at 30,50,70, or 100,000 mile. I had 108,000 on mine. BIL had this happen on a Chevy as well. Have not found where once one spring went they all needed to be replaced. But for the price of the springs if you are replacing one your self, you might as well replace them all.

When ours did go there was no warning, just bam and loss of power and running krappy. Not sure if the spring could have been worn, but over the Rockies we had like no power. Sometimes we were going up in second.(we have oversized tires, enough armor to withstand any rock and the rig was loaded down with jeep parts). Jeff said the libby had more power after it was fixed which could be due to the new plugs, but I swear we had them replaced not too long ago.

Good news when Jeff looked at the motor when it was apart, it looked clean. No sludge, oil was a good color and it wasn't gumming up(his words not mine). Better news, we made it home.

I have to say this, it was all my fault. Jeff wanted to take the Tahoe with 23,000 miles. I wanted my libby. Had I read about the safari in Ouray sooner, we were so close we would have been able to make a run or 2 and this would have happened on a trail and we would have been close enough to BIL's that we could have fixed it ourself. SO no matter which way this is spun, the man was right and I was wrong. Hopefully I will be out of the doghouse soon.:)

I am glad everything worked out for you. You should send that dealer service men a care package. BAGELS AND STUFF LOL

I am surprized the spring did not cost $0.07 and labor $42,958,028.99
