My wife and I were looking at winches today for the YJ (Birthday coming up in a few months).. She then said.. Which winch should I get for the Libby? I said.. I don't know.. I know that you should get one that is atleast 1.5 times the weight of the Jeep.. But we are going to be putting on bigger tires (Revos or BFG AT KOs), lift (Looking at a Frankin Lift), Arb Front Bumper, ARB rear locker, and whatever else we might add over the years.. Don't you love wish lists.. LOL So I know that this adds weight... I am looking at the Warn XD9000i which is what I want to get for my YJ.. Or should I get something like the M12000? Which seems like it is overkill... As always.. Thanks for the help.. Ben |

I'd go for a winch in the 9-10k range. That is a little more then needed but it wont weigh much more. In perspective, my buddy uses his ramsey 10k to free his 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel suburban when it gets stuck and we have yet to break the winch. If a 10k works out all right on a suburban, I am sure it will work just fine on a Jeep. |

Yeah.. 9K-10K range is what I was thinking but wanted to make sure.. I would rather go too big then not big enough... I have seen winches burn up from being too small... Not a pretty sight to see a winch burn up and still be stuck... uvalax236 - Just looked up the 9.5ti.. I like it.. I like how it is sealed and it pulls 500lbs more... I will have to check out the price... Ben |

Any quality winch over 8K lbs will work unless you wheel with fullsized trucks. If you have a winch, you need a winch kit that comes with a snatch block so just count on spending another $100 or so on that. With the snatch block it will pull 16k lbs, but you cut you line length in half. P.S. Stay away from Mile Marker winches unless you know where to get parts for them, cause I haven't been able to find them. |

Milemarker makes a great product. The planetary gear drive is tough. I have used the hydraulic version on Humvees in the army, it is a very stout product. Parts are hard to find, but they are available through milemarker or even Rough Country (i called them when I was looking at winches). |

I have a Warn M8000 (8K winch). It has been used and has been more than was needed in the four times it has been used. |

I think they say the minimum is 1 1/2 times the weight of the vehicle. Since the KJ is between 4,000-5,00 lbs, a minimum rating of 6,000-7,500 lbs would be bare minimum. That means an 8,000l b winch should work fine.....unless you get yourself super duper stuck, but then a 9000 lb winch probably wouldn't work either. |

If you're planning on an ARB bumper you don't want the 9.5ti. You need a low profile winch because the winch fits inside the bumper. XD9000 or the 9.5xp should fit the ARB. Check with ARB first to be sure. |

I was looking at the specs on the ARB bumper and they listed these winches to use with it.. XD9000, M8000, M6000, 9.5XP So I might look at the XD9000 or the 9.5XP Ben |

I've got a Warn 6,000 lb, and a snatch block. I've used the snatch for angled pulls, but never yet had to use it for more power. Cheers. |

Anyone ever use a hand winch? I can't go for a power winch now ($$$), but this 4-ton "come along" seems like it sould do the job if I needed it. |

Use a Hi-lift jack and some straps. On another note, I picked up my Warn M8000 for $600.00 shipped from 4wheelparts.com. They have a sale going on right now. Great deal if you ask me! |

If you wheel with other trucks larger than the KJ expect to pull them out so I'd invest in a 9.5k+ winch. Overkill is never a bad thing |

If you are thinking about using your hi-lift to get you un-stuck consider purchase of a jackmate. |

I own a 9500ti and it worked great on my Liberty and works great on my Rubicon. I also carry a Wyeth-Scott come-a-long. It worked well before buying my winch. I still carry it as a backup. I used the come-a-long to save my butt when I was stuck in a creek at Tellico. I also own a milemarker E9000 and use to own a Ramsey 8000. They both worked really well but the quality of the Warn is much better. And the warn 9500ti pulls like no other winch I ever used. VERY fast at no load when winding the cable up after a pull. Wyeth-Scott Come-a-long - $120 E9000 or Ramsey 8000 - $399 on sale Warn 9500ti on Sale with free shipping - $845 That kind of gives you an idea about the cost. All work for the purpose of recovery. JUST be aware that the 9500ti will not work with the ARB Bumper. Wes |
