Would someone with custom roof rack mounts (replacing the stock rails) care to share their measurements? I'm getting a rack built by someone out of state and I'm going to have him build the mounts too as I cannot weld. :)

Are you looking for a safari rack?

I've been working with something similar... looking at the Ebay safari rack
Like this one

and then finding someone to do the mounts like the ones on the white jeep in this thread.
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... rack#23622

However I put it off to save more money...
when I last talked to the guys at All-J's they said talk to Quinn and see if he remembers how it was done...
They really don't do the racks anymore since they don't ship the mounts...

Hope this helps?

That's the sane guy I've been thinking about getting a rack from. I was just hoping that someone had already done the measurements for the stock mounting holes.

I think I may find a local shop to make the rack though.

I'm pretty sure that you have thought of this but just in case...make sure you make it tall enough so you can still open your sunroof.

Are you saying he made it wrong or did you have him make it wider in the front then the back????

Either way what were your sizes??

I was thinking 42 wide X 60 lenght X 4 Height

With the light bar on front and a mesh floor.

BTW Nice antenna!!

No I made it and found out it is wider in back on the liberty than the front so it would not just sit on the rails had to use some cross pieces . If it fits the back it will be to wide up front or fit up front but be narrower in back. if you make it the same with.

If anyone can post the dimentions of the rail mounts that would be awsome! Im looking to get a basket and want it to sit as low as possible.

I had the same issue except I had mine made to sit inside the Rennie Tupperware. Dimensions side to side are different front to back. (real intelligent design to NOT make the mounts square as every single box/rack on the market has squared dimensions)
I was lucky, 1st I mocked up a design in cardboard to see what the footprint would be and then in PVC tubing (this stuff is so cheap and u can keep cutting it to different lengths, slap on a 90 degree elbow at the four corners and get a real good 3D feel for size. After you get what u r happy with just measure the resulting length and width)

Exactly what dimensions are you looking for?

How far apart the bolts sit, how wide the base plate needs to be, how high the legs need to be, how long should the support bar sit. Stuff like that. If I can get these measurements, than I can have my rack built.

uvalax236,
Can't u just take a tape measure to yours or is there something specific you're having a problem with?

Since I'm looking at the same things...

I am trying to figure out if the bar coming off the mounting plate would be able to be vertical or 90 degrees with the plate or does it lean a little.

Second how to figure out what the height of that bar would be.. since the roof curves a bit toward the center.

Third. How far apart the front to back is and since we now know the libby is wider in the front then the back whats the change there?

I'll be Honest I'm not very good at this stuff...
but interested enough was I get the time to do some work with it

Thanks
Mike

1. I cant figure out how high it needs to be to clear the roof.
2. I hear that there is a difference in the width between the front and rear and want to know what is wider
3. Every picture I see of someone with aftermarket rails has their basket leaning back a little and wanted to know how high theirs are in the rear so I could ajust it and have the rack sit level
4. I have never been good with a tape measure. I tried building my own rack and it ended up REALLY lopsided for some reason.

I see now. U want to totally remove the stock rails and fab ure basket with "feet" that would be bolted into the holes on the roof where the mounts were removed from. I got it. Unfortunately for u (at least in my case), I mounted my basket on top of the stock rails. I could see where your type of mount would be stronger. There are several people on here who have done that. Try looking at some of the LostKJsWest guys rigs and contacting them. I think JJsKJ and Clint both have those racks if I'm not mistaken.
See this thread for alot more discussion on this type of rack:
