How hard would it be to convert from a automatic to a standard?

Easier for a gasser then for a CRD, but its' going to be expensive anyway you look at it.

Different transfer case, it is the 241HD I think. I don't have time to crawl under the Jeep and look right now.

The differential gearing for the manuals is 3.55, not the 3.73 in the autos because of the manual transmission gearing. Since you already have the auto you would already have the 3.73 gears. I am not sure what the cost is to go to 4.11s, but it is something to consider since you would not have to change the differential gearing if you are going to a manual.

Should I try and find a standard transmission and transfer case from a junked KJ or are there other types I can use?

I'm not saying you're wrong on either count, but I have an NP231 and 3.73's. Just sayin'

That said, there's alot more to this swap than just swapping out the tranny and t-case (driveshafts and crossmember too, for that matter).

You'll also need the PCM and wiring from a manual KJ. Your existing PCM and electrical componentry will not jibe with the stick.

I would say finding a junked manual KJ would be the best way to do this (perhaps the only way). You'll get the tranny, t-case, driveshafts, crossmembers, clutch pedal set, clutch master cylinder and hydraulic line, PCM, wiring and any other various items you might need.

Don't forget the wiring harness, pedal assembly, linkage, driveshafts, new interior console...

The best thing to do is ask TJKJ or Tommudd to see if this is even feasable. While you may save some money on the geaing side, it may cost you in other ways.

Copy and paste:

"manual" and "transmission"

into the search section and you will find more information about doing this type of swap among the 800+ posts.

It is possible..... how ever it is going to be cheaper in the long run to just buy a manual KJ.....

Autos come with the NP231 transfer case and 3.73s (Icefisher45)

Manuals come with the NP241HD and 3.55s. (Mine)

Icefisher has an auto and he wants to switch to a manual, which means he already has the 3.73s, so he does not have to worry about the expense of a gear swap, just the expense of converting from auto to manual. :)

Finding a donor KJ is the best way to go if you really want to do this. Better yet, find a used KJ with a manual and sell the auto... :)

I would like to try and keep mine, Its almost paid off. I will do a more in depth search and see if any one has done this before.

Anything is possible of course, but with the way these things are anymore with the computers and such you would almost need to find a complete KJ with a manual and then start switching and rebuilding.
I did the switch in a 67 El Camino one time and the little things had me running back and forth for two weeks and that was an easy install
also that was in 75 so things have changed as well in finding the needed parts:roll:

i'm not saying its impossible.. but by time you use all your time and money to convert.. i'm with the others.. it would be cheaper to just buy one. even the small stuff would need changed over.. like a cruise control switch under the dash that knows when the clutch is pushed so it cancels the cruise.. this switch also keeps it from starting with the clutch out. also when i put it in 4lo it raises the idle, makes it so i can start it with the clutch out, turns traction control off (haha).. and some other electronic nonsense.

I have a 2002 KJ with an NV3550 manual. I have an NP231 t-case (per the little red tag on it) and 3.73's (per my build sheet e-mailed to me from Chrysler). I know manual KJ's were supposed to have 3.55's but my build sheet says 3.73's.

yea that's the clutch safety switch but it should come as part of the pedal assembly, like tom mentioned with these newer rigs you would at least need a computer flash or a new ECM. I saw my dad go through this with a toyota back in the 90's, the only reason he did it though was because he dropped in a chevy engine as well. I'm in agreement here I think it would be more expense and trouble than swapping for a standard KJ, however if you like your KJ it can be done.

Your could always try to look for someone with a standard wanting a swap to an automatic and swap parts....it's a long shot but proly your easiest route.

Interesting, I am guessing the 5 speed manuals used the same equipment as the autos until 2005 when they brought out the 6 speeds. Maybe the different ratios / extra gear had something to do with the different transfer case? Not sure about the differntial gearing. Option? Special order? Tow package?

You have the best of both worlds, manual and you do not have to regear for larger tires. :D

And that brings up an interesting point. Will icefisher need the same manual transmission that came with his year of KJ?

In gas-powered KJ's (nothing else really matters... ):

Auto's had the choice of the 231J (part time) or 242J (fulltime) transfer cases

5-spd's got the 231J and 3.73's

6-spd's got the 241J and 3.55's

Some people think the 241J is the 231 HD

The 241HD does exists and was a ( surprise ) HD version of the 241. I have seen these for sure in Dodge applications, the 241D-HD. If the 241 is a 231HD, the Dodge would be a 231D-HDHD 8) The 241J in the KJ is not the HD version, but is a more stout t-case than a 231J. The 241 was used in 1/2 ton trucks by Chevy & Dodge. The 231 was used in downsized Dakota's & S10's. When the JK porked up over the TJ, they moved the 231J out for the 241J. The 241OR from the Rubi's is pretty much completely different from the 241's used in our KJ's.

I have not kept up with the changes for the KK's.

The KK's are well...

6 speed manual, 3.21's with either MP 1522 which was standard or the MP 3022
Autos get 3.73's with either MP 1522 which was standard or the MP 3022

Now for the strange part....

the MP 1522 is called a MP 256 in the FSM
and the MP 3022 is called a MP 253
