I think my ac compressor is gone on my 04 Kj. Will I damage anything by driving it. Not sure when I will be able to replace it. I was quoted a price of over 500 dollars |

As long as the bearings are ok It should not hurt anything. My daughter ran hers for 6 months before she replaced the compressor. |

I never use it and today I used it and got a bad smell and weird noise. Stopped at a garage and they said that it needs to be replaced or I could do damage.. Could i just recharge it ? Would a compressor from a 98 cherokee fit? |

Does it look like there black oil sprayed all around the back of it? If there is your bearings will go out and it will eventually lock up. Jeep Frogs did that in Moab in July. |

I don't know. You can run a shorter belt and bypass the compressor. There is a thread how to do that and what size belt to get. I'll see if I can find it. |

Thank you for that link. Unfortunately I'm not mechanically inclined. Who would have thought it would have gone since I never use it. |

You can do it you just have to put a socket on the Idler pulley to take tension off the belt so you can remove it. And take off the ac pulley or take out a couple of bolts out of the compressor and move it to give you clearance for the shorter belt. Its only a 30 dollar temp fix compared to over 500.00 |

What do the belts generally run? |

Thank you, I'll try and pick up a belt tomorrow. I have to drive it to work and back. Can I damage the motor? |

You wont hurt the motor but if you compressor locks up you will burn up your belt and be stranded. Jeep frog did make it back off the trail and back to moab. So you might make it. |

Probably ran it longer than that even. |

If it was the compressor would I still be able to get cold air out it. Noise seems to be coming out of the bearings where the pulley is? Can I just replace the front part of the pulley? |

I think somebody on here replaced the bearings but i believe you need a special tool. Most people on here say to just replace the whole thing. I will work on just about any thing on the jeep but I took the advice of others on here and just replaced the whole compressor. My friend that has a repair shop would only replace the whole thing. so it must be a PITA. |

I think I will replace the whole thing. Napa wants 350 and 20 dollars for the belt which is a better price then what I was quoted before at 550 and 79. Can I turn the compressor into a oba minus the freon? Would I get a coolant smell from the compressor or could it be my water pump is about to fail? |

if you've ever used your windshiled defroster/defogger, then you've used your air conditioner compressor. The defroster uses the A/C to dry the air |

Really easy job. It's right on top. Browse junk yards and auto-recyclers, you will find one for under $200. You want to keep it for the de-fogging ability alone. Plus ladies don't like to sweat. In the jeep. Most of the time. Ps thanks for the speed test sig woo wooo =) |
