Changing out my rear end soon since my R&P and/or pinion bearing are shot and it will be cheaper then having a shop do it for me. So the plan is to totally disconnect the rear axle, slide the new on in and bolt it up. Am I making this too easy? Any tips from guys that have taken theirs completely out? Thanks |

Nothing else will work w/ the speedo pickup unless you can find one of those super rare South American KJ D44's..... To Op: Yes, fairly easy, unbolt old one and bolt new one in. Just remember Safety 1st!! |

Might could get an axle out of a Dodge ram to work.. I think they have a 9.25 and they also use the sensor like our kj's. Ive heard mixed reviews about that axle so idk. Its really not that bad at all. I think if you need a lot of gear work done like you do its easier and possibly cheaper to just get a new(used) axle. When I took mine out it was really as simple as taking the shocks off, lower control arms off, then taking the upper tri-link off. The ball joint was a little tricky to get off so I just left the whole upper arm on the Jeep and unbolted the boomerang from the Jeep. After I had the axle out of the Jeep I took the thing off the axle. And make sure you torque everything to specs then check it again after a few hundred miles. Of course youve got to take the brake line off along with the speed sensor wire and such. Just keep in mind that thing is pretty heavy, dont go dropping it on your foot or anything. And that brake fluid will continue to leak out even if you tape it up as good as you can, haha. I dont like to let the brake fluid drain completely. |

Just remember Safety 1st!! D44 would be nice, but have a fairly cheap one buying off a guy on here. Safety first...yah!!!!!!! I'm probably going to have 3 sets of jack stands under the rig. Dumping the beast would suck!!!! Jeepjeepster.....the brake lines is one of the things that worries me the most and that I've really been lookin at as to make it as easy as possible. I'd hate to bend one of those lines. I was hoping to take the calipers off and hang them so I don't have completely disco the caliper. I see there is a junction though on the drivers side attached to the axle, so still have to look into that. |

Yeah, it is. That may be what you want if you are doing a SFA though. Not sure if you could cut it down and get shorter axles or not if you didnt want a full width. That little brake distribution box is held on by the axle vent. The axle vent unscrews then the block will come right off. If you wanted, you could take the vent off then take the hard lines off the axle and hang it all up like you said. That way you wouldnt need to open the system up so no need for bleeding. Im pretty sure that vent held that block on. Its been awhile since I took my axle out. |
