http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v612/ ... I_0105.flv

Ive been running without my halfshafts and front driveshaft for like 6 months now. Since winter is fast approaching ill need to start thinking about fixing and putting that stuff back in the Jeep since its useless in 2wd in snow.

Can anyone help me out?

my kj did the same thing in that video, i just replaced the center shaft inside the differential housing and passenger half shaft, when i pulled them out the splines for the inner portion of the cv were rusted and almost stripped. they also made a slight knocking noise when driving steadily on the accelerator pedal. replaced those two and noise was gone.

Thanks guys, do you have any part #'s and location you bought these from. There seems to be a lot of talk about not getting autozone type parts for this job...

That center shaft is a dealer part only.Stay away from "new" CV shafts sold at places like autozone, the only "new" CV's that are okay to use is OEM CV's(dealer only and big $$$),get remaned CV's only since they are the correct CV's.

I just went in the basement and shook around the passenger (longer, right?) C/V assembly and the noise is definitely the shaft that sticks out the end wobbling in the hub.

This brings up a few more questions:
1) #6 is the shaft I want right? What actually connects this shaft to the other end? Must be a splined hub inside or something?
2) How do I get this shaft out of the C/V joint?

Ahh, money really isnt an issue. Finding time to get it fixed is though. Just gotta keep a close eye on it. So far in 6k miles its not changed. Same with the pinion seal, its still just a little wet so its no issue.

Napa has reman'd cv's for about 50 bux each. Dunno if they are stock remans or not.

Also, I just bought 2 cvs with less than 20,000 miles and the inner shaft (the dealer only part) off of ebay for less than $200 shipped to my door.

as far as how to get the cv off of the inner shaft, you may be out of luck. Spray a lot of penetrating fluid in there. The axle is just held in by a little ring, similar to a snap ring. It is supposed to collapse and let it come apart with a little force. Mine was so rusted and gummed up that even with the penetrating fluid I had to drive the CV off with a hammer while I had the inner shaft locked in a vise. It ended up striping the splines off of the end of the inner shaft. Thus the need for the new inner shaft.

When I put the new one in, I am considering greasing it real well inside and trying to seal the joint with RTV or a sealing ring. Advance Auto parts has a "differential seal" that is crap (for a diff seal) but may work well for this. It is a small rubber ring that doesn't mount to anything. I wasn't impressed with it so I went and bought the dealer seal when I replaced my drivers side one. The Advance parts one could be RTV'd to the CV hub to create a seal when the inner shaft goes into it. I'm gonna try it anyway... Can't hurt and it is a couple of bux.

Ive been dying to get back on here and post the latest! Welcome back LOST.

Anyways...

Brought driveshaft and both front CV's to a driveshaft repair guy last week. He told me the front CV joint on the front driveshaft of KJs go out all the time and that he fixes about two a week.
Sure enough he found a small tear in the rubber boot on the front side of the driveshaft and the joint was a little wobbly. Instead of replacing the whole driveshaft he cut off the end and welded on a U-Joint with a Spicer bearing. Says he does this for all his repairs and never had one come back yet. Cost was $250 which is a lot but not too bad if it works.

Now im wondering if the CVs are bad after all? The shake at the diff side that is shown in the video in the original post is definitely a bad CV or do they all move a little there? Mine isnt quite as bad as the video.

I am searching for the fix for this exact same issue. I would like to purchase the same part as jdumont. Anyone have any experience with that? The video that the OP linked to is exactly what i see on mine. The cv's are nice and tight no play but that right side half shaft? - thats whats all wobbly.

What about this question, if that part, The half shaft or axle shaft needs to be replaced whats the best place to purchase a replacement part besides the over $300 dealer part?

Thanks,

Im prob going to try Rockauto for a reman unit. Everyone here says do not buy an aftermarket branded NEW. Only reman or dealer new or JBA CVs.
