Post subject:  Is My Starter Going Bad?

A while ago I went to start my jeep and each time I turned the key, 3 times, it would try to start for a fraction of a second, but nothing happened. Then on the 4th try it finally started up normal.
After this it worked fine for a month.

Today I try to start my jeep and turn the key 4 times, each time again it tries to start for a fraction of a second, but that was it. On the 5th try it started normal and has been normal since then.

What is going on?
Any ideas?

It could be your battery going out maybe.

can you hear the starter spinning, making a whine, but the engine just wont turn over?

It sounds just like it normally does when you go to start it, but it only last for a fraction of a second. So it's not just a "click" sound.

It never gets to the point of actually turning over. Just makes the normal "grunting" sound of an engine starting but just for that fraction of a second.

Makes me kind of nervous because I'm always way out on forest roads on the weekend. A stuck jeep out there would really suck !!!

Or maybe loose or corroded battery cables.

Possibly a bad connection to the starter as well

x2 on the bad connections, I have done many temporary starter fixes just by wiggling a loose connection, then fixed it right when I got home.
