The plastic handle used to pull the hood release has broken. I can use a pair of pliers to grab the cable and give it a yank, ant the latch will release, but thats a PITA.I'm wondering if I could just install some of those hood pins the old muscle cars used to have, and just do away with the remote latch. Any thoughts?

Before you do that, check your state's motor vehicle inspection laws if they have any. With the protusions through the hood of the pins, they might look at them as hazardous, and refuse an inspection sticker/certificate.
