Post subject:  Check TPM System

While driving home yesterday, I heard a ding and saw the orange flat-tire indicator light up. I didn't feel like I had a flat, so I looked up at the EVIC, which said "Check TPM System". I tried turning the ignition off and on again, and I did inspect all the valves, they seemed fine, no visible damage (although one of the caps was missing, so I took the one off the spare to replace it). This morning it was still complaining of it, but about halfway to work it stopped. Anybody ever see this error before and know what to look for? I want to believe it's just the valve cap, but if it's something else, I wonder if I should bring it in.

Check the pressure in the spare.

I've had that before, it says "Spare Pressure Low" on the EVIC and the orange dash-indicator blinks.

This time it just says "Check TPM System" and the indicator is steady.

if your dash light is steady, then one of your drive tires are low...if it went out on your drive to work, then it's probably just a bit low, and when the tires heat up, it brings it back into spec...

if your dash light is blinking, that's the spare...

Right, I've had low pressure on a normal tire and a spare tire before. When I have tires with low pressure, the EVIC says "Tire Pressure Low", and when it's the spare, it says "Spare Pressure Low". It never says "Check TPM System", which is what it said this time. I'm tempted to try taking the air out of one of the tires to see if it can actually detect it or if the TPM is failing.

Ditto. I'd be giving the Jeep guys a chance to do a little warranty work.

It seems to me nobody was getting the point you were stressing ... it is NOT low pressure, just the "Check TPM System" message ... same thing happened to me; the only technical-reasonable explanation so far (altough IT IS NOT THE SAME CAR, but same system) is at www.wkjeeps.com/wk_tpms.htm ... very good actually ... the solution seems to be related with an inconsistency on the frequency each wheel transmits its "keepalive" ... if all don`t transmit in sync it will report a problem ... seems it requires fixing at the dealer (probably replacing the faulty valve). In another link I found information for the WKs where you can even set the EVIC in test mode to detect the frequency of transmition from each wheel ...

Does your EVIC display the pressure on each tire? My '06 does and sometimes one of the sensors or receivers decides to take a nap. It has happened 3-4 times for me, particularly in the winter. It generally clears up in a day or less.

Your EVIC displays the tire pressure ? Mine DONT, as far as I know ... is it a Firmware upgrade or is it standard factory installed EVIC ?

Mine just reports "low" or "high" pressure per tire ...

Thx !!!

I get the alert in the instrument cluster and on the EVIC but in stepping through the screens on the EVIC I get a dsiplay of four tire pressures and if one is below the range it flashes. I am not sure how the spare displays. When I get an alarm like you are seeing it generally then throws up the one that shows the individual. Most of the time when that happens one display shows no pressure when there obviously is.

Want a picture of the display?

I'd try re-setting the TPMS at least once b4 taking it in.... use the donut magnet and re-set all 5 tires and see if that takes care of the problem - if not, dealer might have to look into it.

Re-setting the TPMS ? How can you do it ? Where can I buy the donut magnets ?

Thx !

On the 05's they did away with the magnet crap. Some how it resets itself when You rotate the tires. One time mine said bad/sensor missing and I had to retrain them and it fixed it, but idk about this one.

Post subject:  BUMP: new questions to an old problem

I found this old post but it relates to a couple of problems I am currently having.

First: Every time I start my Jeep I get a "Check TPM system" warning on the EVIC. I just hit the reset button and it clears until I start it again. Everything functions fine. The dealer said that the system is just slow to register so it thinks there's a problem until I reset it and then everything registers normally. They recommended that I just hit the reset button each time because it would be pricey to start replacing parts for something like that. I am less concerned about this than my other problem but would appreciate any feedback on this issue.

Second: When I was out on the trail last weekend and airing back up, that the rear tire sensors are reversed. The left rear shows up as the right rear on the EVIC and the right rear shows up as the left. Not a big deal but it bugs me just know it. My question is how do I retrain the system. I have seen numerous posts mentioning it but I can't find specifics here, in the FSM or in the owner's manual. Please chime in if you know anything about this. Thanks!

That is strange, I rotated all 5 of my tires and the 4 showed the PSI on the EVIC, so I hope it's the correct PSI reading with the correct tire. Now you have me wondering.

LOL - I would have never noticed but I aired up the front first, then the right rear. I was near a highway so I could see well enough with all the ambient light to do those three without a flashlight. When I got to the left rear it was too dark to see my gauge so I climbed into the cab to grab it and a drink of water and glanced at the EVIC and it showed the wrong tire pressured up :?: . I was tired and confused and thought that maybe I had aired up the left after all. After a few seconds I realized that the display was wrong. Its one of those errors that you can live with but I sure hope someone can tell me how to fix it anyway.

I have read that if you don't have the caps on it will affect the readings. Make sure you have caps on all 5 tires. If that doesn't work try re-training it with the magnate.
