After having a hell of a good time at ECS this past weekend, I discovered that the one bit of damage to the rig was the knarlling of the valve stem on my drivers front wheel. about 1/4" of it was crushed and shell cracked. I was able to get a bike pump around it to re-inflate back up to highway pressure (thank you Ace Hardware in Oak Ridge), but can't get a standard inflation chuck or anything threaded onto it anymore....and I have Tire Pressure Monitoring.

The TPM sticks out of the wheel a bit and looks to have a wrench-able tip into which the threaded inflation stem fits. Has anyone had a repair like this performed or am I just wishing and need to go by a new sensor/stem?

Dan

Not sure if you can change'em out.The tpms comes with the stem.
The top nut holds the sensor in I believe.
Check with Mike08liberty,he may still have some for sale.

I broke one when the tire shop put a metal cap on too tight and the air came out as I tried to get the cap off. It was under $20 mail order and the tire did not need to come off the rim, just the outside bead unseated and it can be replaced. The Nut holds it onto the rim. If you loosen the nut the air will leak out.

The part number appears to be 68001696ab and it looks like this:

price at moparpartsamerica is $40.58 and the local jeep dealer charges $72 for the part.

Now to find out how much the local tire place charges to break the bead and replace the sensor properly...

I believe that this is what you are looknig for:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/RARE-TPM ... cessories-

Do a wider e-bay search and you will come up with results to match a numbre of years and rigs.

That kit is everything EXCEPT the part that needs replacing (but a good find). The local firestone told me they'd install and re-mount the tire for 40 bucks if I gave them the sensor, so it'll end up being just under $100 with shipping from moparparts and tax at firestone. Now I just have to wait for the part to come...

Wow, $40, Dan that sounds like a lot, you may want to find a local mom and pop tire shop and they may do it cheaper. As someone else said the tire doesn't even need to come of the rim. Just pop the bead on the side with the valve stem, then twist off and reapply.

Yeah, I'd love to be able to do that, but in this area, there really aren't any mom-and-pop anythings. It's hard to find anyplace that isn't a chain with fixed labor hours. They drove all the little shops out of business years ago. I yearn for a smaller city where people actually have accountability for their work (perhaps one a little farther north...customer service in ATL just bites.)

Do you have a photo of the part?

Did you know that SCHRADER is the manufacturer of the OEM TPMS sensors?
I have a contact e-mail address (just need to search really deep in my inbox...) let me know if you are interested.

I now have the part in my possession and I'm guessing only the outside bead needs to be broken and this could be done with the wheel still on the jeep. Anyone performed this work before and how hard is it to break/reset the bead if I just do it myself?

Dan
