| Post subject: | New JBA 4.5 arms and popping in front end |
I recently installed some JBA Gen 4.5 UCAs and had it aligned. I had to get some 1.25" wheel spacers as the tires were rubbing the JBA arms. Now I am getting a lot of popping noise coming from the right front when stopping and starting (especially when turning) and hitting bumps when turning. I noticed that the alignment shop had to max out the caster setting on the right front to get it into spec. By this I mean that the rear bolt is set to push the LCA as far out as possible and the front bolt is set to pull the front of the LCA in as far as possible. The left side seems to be in about the middle for caster and camber. Is this normal (the caster setting)? Any ideas on the popping noise? It is driving me bonkers. |

I know stupid question but did you tighten everything to specs after it was on the ground. Did it start doing it after it was aligned? I always kind of work backwards if I am trying to find something like that , looking at the last thing done and so forth. |

I tend to work the same way. I couldn't drive it to get it aligned after installing the arms because of the tire rub. So as soon as I got the spacers, I took it for the alignment. I can't say for sure if it was popping before the alignment or not. I know it wasn't before I put on the new UCAs. I did re-torque all of the bolts once it was on the ground. I even loosened the UCA bolts, bounced the suspension a few times and then tightened them back up. I checked the LCA bolts for tightness, have been checking the torque on the wheel spacers almost nightly during the first hundred miles. I really am suspecting that the LCA bolts being maxed out to get the caster in spec is causing some sort of binding and popping, but am just not sure. |

I had a similar situation. I drove with it for a couple of years before figuring it out. It drove me bonkers. One day I was having brake trouble. I replaced my rotors and after that, the noise was gone. Boy was I surprised. I was sure that it was suspension related. |

I've noticed the same thing too. Mine's going back into the shop to have my front coils swapped out (they installed the wrong ones) and I plan on asking them about the noise. Maybe they can figure out what cuases it. |

Very interesting. I will have to look at the rotors. |

Please post up if they find the issue. |

I would check the upper control arm nut's and make sure they are tight, I installed a set of factory moog upper arms and tightend them, so I thought, and I had some poping/rattle nose at times! I used a braker bar and cranked on the upper nut/bolts and prob. solved !!! |

that's part of the problem with large carriage and suspension bolts, they often will lie and give false torque readings due to grit, grime and rust either on the nut, on the bolt or in or around bushings i usually replace nuts and bolts when replacing items like uca's or lca's and even that hasn't always rectified the type of issue you might be havin best you can do is keep an eye on powdercoats for any tell-tell rubbing in the wrong places and retorque everything the alignment shop will probably stick the impact on them and give them a few hits and ask you to come back if you keep hearing it |

A bad upper control arm or lower? What was the problem with it? |

i dont think your lower would cause a popping sound if that helps out, is it at full lock or just bumps |

It was a new jba 4.5 - the rear bushing was not seated and moving around,You could see it move ever so slightly which caused a creaking noise more than a popping noise though,Marlin sent a new one. |

It happens sometimes going straight and stopping or accelerating. Sometimes, it pops when letting off the brake and nothing else. Sometimes it is when I am coasting and hit a bump. It does seem to happen more when turning left and loading the right side. |

I checked the torque on the wheel spacers and also tightened the snot out of the UCA bolts tonight. As soon as I let it off the jack and dropped it into reverse "POP" followed by a couple more as I backed out of the garage. |

Mine kept popping and banging after installing the new coils & A-arms. it ended up my sway bar links were loose. I found it by standing at the wheel well & shaking the KJ side-to-side. I could get it to make the noises by shaking it real hard. After I re-tightened the driver side one the noise quit. |

Got it resolved mostly. The rear adjusting bolt on the right lower control arm was a bit loose. I couldn't get it tight enough by hand, but had the alignment shop put an impact on it and the noise is almost totally gone. Still happens every now and then, and I suspect that is from the bushings being old, cracks, and in need of replacement. |
