Post subject:  Shock mount carnage, How to fix?

Went wheelin with some guys in bigger jeeps the other day, and in the process of trying to keep up managed to mess up a few things on the KJ. Most important of which being my right rear shock mount. I landed on a big ol rock and it got pushed to the side.

Drivers side no damage (for comparison sake):

passenger side:

So, what is the best way to fix this?

Also, had a window regulator go out this morning, bad sh :!: t likes to happen all at once I guess. At least the dealer will be fixing the window regulator, doesn't need to know about the rest of the damage

Maybe heat it up and bend it back?

That's not too bad. You should see mine, LOL. I'll take pics of it when I get a new camera. I plan on cutting mine off and fabing a new one higher up (with appropriate bump stops) to get it out of the line of fire. My boss at work just quit and I've taken over so it has kept me super busy. As soon as I get some time I'll knock it out.

there is nothing you can't fix with a Torch and a BIG hammer. :D
Anyway yes, beat it back in chape, I would heat it up a bit first.

x2!!
I've had to bend some metal back in shape a few times and a BFH helped...a lot.

Sometimes we had to break out or OxyAcetylene torch and heat it up, but none the less, it worked.

I've done that!!!!!

I have always been led to believe that reheating the metal was not a great idea, as it reduced the tensile strength.

I found a body-shop that had a pneumatic press who straightened out my driver's side one using shims.

I also know from checking that the OEM bracket is not sold by itself but as part of the axle tube...

But if it does break, it is a perfect excuse to relocate them with new tabs that don't hang down like those do!!!

Hey thanks for the help errbody! BFH it is. So am I right in assuming that it doesn't have to be perfect when bent back, but only "close"?

I would think that as long as the shock isn't binding during travel it will be OK.

So which trail were you attempting when you did this??? Something out in white Tanks, Table Mesa, FJ?

Nope, it was the backway to Crown King. I ran it with people from the AZVJC. I got high centered early on and had to be winched out, but the shock mount wasn't busted til near the end on a big f'n rock.

It was fun, but a little much for my KJ.

See that was your first problem, you should have come out with the AZ LOST group. :) lol

Seriously though, i had beat the living heck out of mine after several trips to UT, CA and here in AZ. I finally went and had a shop in Tucson weld on new mount on the axle tub. They sit a lot higher and I don't think I've hit them yet (in the last 3 years of use). The only down-side was that I had to get new shocks. Thankfully Adventure Trailers had some OME left overs laying around.

You wouldn't have pictures of that would you? I was thinking of having mine relocated. I have been talking to a fab guy that has done it to a bunch of XJ's and Wranglers, but would like to see how others have done it.

AND, I would like to get out with you AZ LOST guys, but all the runs are always on weekends, and I work

Not sure off hand if I do or not. If I remember, I'll try to get a pic or two for you. In the process of moving and time is running short. If I don't remember, shoot me a pm. thanks,

Well at least on this site you get useful help and tips-- not that low brow, knuckle dragging " duuh, I didn't know they put a mall in Crown King" waste of time joking you see elsewhere:where it seems to be convenient to bash our very capable Jeep KJ's.

Not to be an azz, but I had three people offer me help to fix it, and another two people PM me offering to help. Yeah there were a few people making fun, one was the person who winched me out of a tough spot, and the other was just being an a hole. I have pretty thick skin and can take some ribbing. If I couldn't handle that I wouldn't be on that site.

I posted it hear to get KJ specific info, and over there to see what they had to say. I got help from both sites, so thanks to everyone who replied.

You are right- there are people at Vjc that were willing to help you and assisted you with a winch and I apologize for forgetting about those very decent folks--

But--

I guess I am very pro KJ and can call those other mouthbreathers out for joking on KJ and say HAHA to them!!!

But back on thread- Please let us know how you end up fixing that upside down shock tower and to post some fix pics.
I always wondered about those plow points and see they do end up getting hit.

Heating only hurts if you've got heat treated steel (or aluminum) that you're working on and you get above certain temperatures. My guess is on most car body parts it is not an issue but I really don't know for sure.

Id be more concerned with repetitive correction, like bending a paper clip back and forth. Once you see cracks forming you've got a problem. If it happens again I'd have someone weld in some metal in some way to support it better.

Oh yeah reading your OP, the rear regulators are easy to fix if you are having to pay out of warranty.
I have had 4x practice so please contact me on best local price in town and maybe help on instalation.

I hear full pop on parts and labor at dealer is around $375.

It's a long story about the window regulator, but it was under warranty and cost me 150 bucks.
