Ok I need to know what u joints sound like when they are going bad. I have this noise coming from the rear end of my jeep and I cant figure it out. Its a clanking/grinding noise coming from the center rear (just above or behind the rear seats). I know its not my brakes because I have already checked them. It doesnt make any noises while driving (giving it gas), but when I let off of the gas it starts to make that noise. When I press on the brakes it gets worse. A buddy of mine said my u joints were shot... could that be it? Any ideas would be great... its really got me worried. |

I'm guessing it's the ball joint on the rear upper control arm. Mine went bad and I had the same symptoms. Try rocking it from the rear and if you hear that clanking noise, that could be it. I bought the whole upper control arm with bushings and ball joint here (number 18 is the whole package): http://www.jeep4x4center.com/jeep-steer ... rty-kj.htm If you have good tools, and all of your bolts come out easy, it shouldn't take more than an hour to replace. It took me four... |

I say the u joints make a squeeking noise when the y are going bad, if the joints become loose enough, you would hear clanking noise and vibrations while driving. and also upon de-celeration .Ginding noise, could be the rear, or bearings. the rear control arm, the first thing that goes is the center ball joint. you can check that by getting under and prying with a prybar( up and down motion) if you have play, replace it. I dont really see where the Grinding noise would come from bad rear ball joint or bushings. Get under the KJ and look for excessive rust around the u joint caps. Also if in fact they are that bad you should be able to grab the Drive shaft and feel play in the joints. Hope it helps |

get under the jeep.. grab the drive shaft and rock it back and forth with your hands. it should move some and have a solid sounding 'click' back and forth.. if it feels very sloppy and makes noise then it's a ujoint. |

Oh yeah they were the U-joints alright... lol. Wow they where beyond shot. Upon further investigation the front drive shaft is bad too. Man... what did I do!! All the ball joints are good by the way. Thanks for the help. |

more than likely, you didn't DO anything, non-greasable stuff only lasts forever when grandma drives it well.. not my grandma, she used to drop her fairlane in reverse and sling gravel out the driveway into the street, drag it in drive without stopping and you'd hear the 4bbl burp and she was complaining that the "fan belt was squealing" she never did believe us when we told her it wasn't the fan belt it was her tires good to see ya back by the way scout |
