| Post subject: | Exterior door trim installation instructions? |
Well I finally ripped off my door trim that was hanging slightly loose and spent my evening heating, scraping rubber tape off. Anyone know if there are instructions somewhere on how to reinstall door trim? It is the piece that has "Liberty" moulded into it. There are 3 little clips on the back but they wouldn't hold anything, it may be that you're supposed to have 3 little mating clips or something? Also there are some large holes in the door that I think need to be covered or plugged. Anyone know the standard way to do all of this? paint prep for 2 sided tape, part numbers for tape / clips, whatever. Thanks. |

Remove what's left of the 3M double sided tape on the side emblems,re-apply 3M double sided tape(automotive grade, the expensive stuff) and stick back on the door.Make sure the metal is clean and wax/grease free and the warmer the metal the better the adhesion will be(75-90 degrees is preferred). |

Ok thanks. There are three little holes that the trim centers on, and I think two 3/4" or so holes with a boss around them at each end as well. I think another that is like 1/2" but it is not in front of me at the moment. I'll probably tape over them with something. there was some tape mostly covering them when I took off the trim. |

yeah when I painted my trim pieces and bumpers there was clear tape covering the big holes.. i put my pieces back on with eight, 1 inch long pieces of auto 3m on the long ones and i think another six on the rear door piece. has held up fine |

Thanks guys, before I got the last few replies I used WD-40 and tape primer for 3M VHB tape. I used regular 3m automotive tape though, and it worked great. I used really heavy packaging tape for recovering the large holes. I'm happy now... |

Rubbing alcohol works great too. Some serious car detailers will wipe down their paint after cleaning and polishing it before waxing to make sure all fillers if any from the polish are removed. |

Actually you reminded me...I used WD-40 to get the old tape resin off before waxing, not to remove the new wax. I did use 70% Isopropyl Alcohol to remove the wax. |
