Question 1). How many clicks can you pull your brake before you need more than one hand to pull the handle? Or how far up does it go if you don't know the number of clicks. Question 2). How many clicks does it take before it doesn't roll? Question 3). Should you be able to drive away without stalling with the brake on as hard as it will go? Reason I ask is, I can pull the handle all the way up to the center console quite easily, and it takes at least 5 clicks before it stops rolling, 10 clicks before I feel like it might actually hold, and no matter how far I pull it I could easily drive off without realizing it was still on. And I just had both the handle assembly and parking brake shoes replaced at the dealer. They tell me that if they adjust it any tighter it could cause damage to the rotors. |

That's your problem first of all Second they either installed the shoes wrong, the parking brake assembly wrong or you cables are strecthed OR they just plain are "lost" on how to fix it correctly. My handle goes about 1/2-3/4 the way up before the parking brakes are LOCKED up. Very few dealers can make the correct repairs when it comes to just about anything and that is from experience dealing with them for many many years. I just cringe at the thought of having to take my vehicles to them for warranty work, I would NEVER pay to have anything done at dealership unless I know the technician personaly. |

Theres a little clutch on the handle in the console that does not do its job. When I have mine adjusted it will hold the Jeep on a hill with 3 clicks easily. It will slowly gain clicks until I adjust it again. Ive gotten to where I can adjust it at redlights when its needed. I posted a couple threads on that subject but idk where they are. |

Your parking brake is self adjusting, and there is no adjustment procedure if you have the rear disc brakes. Right from the FSM............. Quote: NOTE: The parking brake is self-adjusting, It can
not be adjusted. What jeepjeepster is referring to is the brake lockout procedure for safely working on the parking brakeand is not a way to adjust the parking brake.Your parking brake is only for assistance for the "park" in the transmission(or leaving in gear for the manual trans). It is supposed to be easily overpowered if you put the vehicle in gear, more so for reverse. If you can not easily overpower the paring brake in gear your parking brake is set to tight(applies to hydraulic braking systems only). |

so the fact that it takes 5-6 clicks just to stop the jeep from rolling down a hill and I can pull the handle all the way up to the console with one hand is fine, then, because it is "self-adjusting"? Or can I bring it back to the dealership and tell them to try again? |

LOL, mine is pretty bad... I don't leave it in neutral anymore... it's always going in first or reverse depending on which way I am pointing on a hill... I just had the drivers side brake (rear) off and I can see that the parking brake is worn to dust.... yeah, time to replace that one. -Mark |

tjkj2002 - so how many clicks or how far should the handle go? I just want to know if I'm crazy or if something is wrong. I'm sitting in the dealership waiting room right now after they told me 'we'll try to adjust it, but we don't want it dragging on the rotors'. It seems like something else must be wrong if it's dragging on the rotors AND the handle goes all the way up. |

Well if you already had to have the parking brake shoes replaced, did you replace the rear rotors also? The rear rotor hat that is used for the parking brake may be worn to much making the parking brake not work properly. Most people never measure the rotor hats to make sure they are still in spec's and are not "out of round".

Whoops, I forgot to mention that. They did just do the rear rotors as well. So you can imagine my shock at having spent ~$300 on the parking brake handle assembly, $100 on the parking brake shoes, and another $500 on rear rotors only to find the parking brake handle still going all the way up to the console. So after waiting in the waiting room for awhile and being told multiple times "we're worried that the shoes will drag on the rotors", they told me they adjusted it as tight as it will go. 3 clicks to hold, 5 clicks and I can't pull it any more without using my other hand or really yanking. Much better. |

$500 on rear rotors and $300 for a parking brake assembly? That just sounds rediculously overpriced, and I'm suprised you'd ever have to replace the brake handle assembly unless it actually broke. Did they also replace the calipers and pads in that $500 rotor price? |

errr... if you can easily over power your braking brake it is useless. when my jeep is in neutral on any type of incline (very very small to large) it takes all the parking brake has to get it to stay there (the entire way up). That is when it locks my wheels so it will not move... and that is not easily over powered in 1st or reverse. one click down when it is not locked and WILL roll then it is easily over powered.. rendering it useless as a parking brake. it is not supposed to be easily over powered... if it is dont bother using it it's not good for much more then an arm work out |

Budke wrote: My parking brake takes 5-6 clicks until I can't pull it up anymore..... That's because you have rear drum brakes and the parking brake on your KJ uses the whole rear service brakes(drums) for the parking brake. The newer KJ's with rear disc brakes have a very small drum setup for the parking brake that uses the rear rotor hat for the paring brake.Basically your parking brake is over 2X's the size of there's and thus over twice as effective.

Im not sure what the wk uses but I would think its similar to the kj's parking brake. 1-2 clicks and it practically locks up the rear tires and theres no moving it unless you really want to give it some gas. Far as Im concerned my kj has the worst parking brake out of our Jeeps. 2 having rear disc and 2 having drum. |

FYI - Jeepster's writeup on adjustment first thread is inside - thread in the thread is outside http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=19141&highlight=adjust+parking+brake |
