I know everyone hates rust and usually we try to avoid it, but what do you guys do to prevent rust when doing mods, if you chose 'other' please explain. |

I had to choose other since not every application requires the same technique for rust prevention. Some apps bare metal must be kept bare for friction purposes which a paint or other rust prevention products will not allow to happen. Then there are other apps that you can just paint then assemble with no issues. Then there are other apps that the parts need nothing since they are either zinc coated or anodized already. |

Agree with Troy, too many variables to say what works best all of the time, each thing you install takes a slightly diffrrent approach on protecting from rust issues. For Example installing rock rails, you would want to of course sand, primer and paint them first, then start drilling holes which you would then want to touch up the paint where you drilled, install the rock rails, and maybe even then go back and retouch up the paint. If you could say what you are looking at doing then a better answer could be provided. |

I actually found very small amounts of rust at the bottoms of my doors last time I waxed, on the inside where the sheet metal is folded over. The thought crossed my mind to clear silicone similar joints, but then I started to wonder if I'd be sealing water IN... |

This was just kind of a basic Hole Drilling question, when I installed my new bumper I had to drill several holes in the front end of the area under what used to be the bumper shell. I need to tear it apart today to relocate my washer bottle, and I wasn't sure if I should rattle can the holes while I'm in there, or if there was something better to use. |

Don't seal them up completely. |

If your trying to repair rust at the bottem of the door's , grind off the rust, then coat the area with (POR 15) then paint over. Also can apply some (POR 15) inside of doors and run along bottem, just dont clog up the drains at the bottem of the door's. |

WWW.POR15.COM is the web site. Its a non-porus coating which keeps moisture away from metal permanently !! POR15 adhere's to rust better than bare metal and dries quicker in humidity, totaly opisite of normal coating's or paint. The only way you can remove it is with a grinder !!!! |

Do they sell it in local stores anywhere, or is it something you have to order online? I have only found it online also. |

POR15 is pretty good, another one that's almost as good is Zerorust( JC whitney may still carry it), not to mention, is isn't toxic like POR. Plus, is doesn't have to be topcoated either as POR15 will fade if in any sunlight. Then again, POR is like armour once it dries, very durable. You will ask a hundred people, you will probably get a hundred different answers. If you are just drilling holes, then get a decent epoxy primer and then top coat. If they are behind and unseen, spray a little primer in a cup, use a q-tip to dab the holes, then do same with paint. I use Rustoleum heavy metal primer for about everything. It's designed to cover up old rusty metal, but works well with new metal too. I took an old rusty utility trailer back in '94. lightly sanded off rust, brush painted it with the heavy rusted primer, then put in in use, never did top coat it. Just this past spring, I looked at it and rust starting to pop back through, stuff is wonderful. |
