How would one tell if a shock were blown?
My brother just bought new shocks for his dakota and wants to know if he already blew them...

bounce it up and down or just pull the shock off and test it. Also look for any oil like substance on the shock body. Doesn't take much, I blew one of my Ranchos before I installed bumpstops
