Well, looks like Jeep is about to go "offroad" (going where jeep tried with it's 2wd versions (remember the jeepster wagon?).. now it's the crossover)with it's new brands. But I have to give them some credit with trying to hold on to the "off road" perception.

Are you saying a jeep 4x2 won't go off road???

I'll put a locked 4x2 against any 4x4 except for rock crawling or a pulling contest.

A front wheel drive 4x2 will go better in most conditions alone over a rear wheel version.

Good grief, that's hideous!

Can we just pretend that's not a Jeep?

Sure, they'll go off road. They just won't get back on again!

Except that 4x2's don't have part-time 4 hi (obviously) or low range, so as long as you avoid bog-holes requiring front traction to climb out of and trails with steep hills on them you'd be fine.
;)

I've been up the worst of (steep) muddy hills going foward in mine.

See, all those extras mean more to think about, just hit the gas and go. Once the weight shifts to the back when you hit the hill, you'd be suprised how easy it will climb.

I also don't hit the terrain at idle speed and I only stop for lunch. I usually hit a bog hole so hard its empty when I'm through it.

The only advantage a 4x4 has in that terrain (to me) is to help you stay straight so you dont get sideways and tumble down hill.

They took a liberty, added a hideous body kit and the roofline of a nissian. :vomit:

I totally missed the PT cruiser with the Jeep grill

Yeah that new Wrangler is pretty sweet. I'm afraid I was distracted by the horrific new Compass though.

As a general rule of thumb. If you can make it in two-wheel-drive, you need to find a more challenging trail!

So as not to get too off topic in this thread I've put some of our club photos here;
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=44436#44436
If you can get a 4x2 through that lot I'd be mighty impressed.
:)

And if you can get that Compass thing through then I'd happily rip the 4x4 system out of my KJ and eat it.

Lasorda crashing through the window at Cobo was cool, except for the little ramp preset for his ease through the "obstacle." Kinda detracted from the Rubi's image...

I'd like to see that

Well, considering a 2x4 Liberty has about as much ability on packed snow and ice as my kids little tikes wagon, I have to say yes. This based on my 27 months of driving my KJ in 2wd and 4wd in the above conditions. But, I agree a fwd Escape will out do a rwd Liberty in the same conditions.. (I'm sure this will open a can of worms) but I'm not here to debate 2wd vs 4wd. I've had my fwd minivan for 13 years. To the difference between having a 2wd "off road" branded Jeep vs a 4wd "off road" Jeep is finding a parking spot for the 2wd version at the trail head and hitching a ride with 4wd version. :D

Put some weight in the rear end bud or a few studs and you won't have as much of a problem.

a major percent of vehicle capability is knowing how to use what you got.

Move to TEXAS the most perfect Republic and snow won't be a constant issue.

contrary to popular belief a 4x2 will go through anything a 4x4 will go through, you just need to hit it faster. A lot faster.
