Read in that awful CD service manual the other day that the expected life of wheel mounted pressure sensors is 10 years.....battery not replaceable....it says.

Just for info as some trucks are starting to approach that age.
THE WHOLE SENDER HAS TO BE REPLACED:
*tyre off
*sender unit removed & replaced.

Go figure!

When it comes down to it maybe we can work around this....there are some clever bods around this Jeep forum.

All the best
Auberon.

Somebody somewhere will figure out a way to replace the battery. Unless the price of the sending units comes down considerably.

nope, you are stuck chunking out $50 every time one dies.......the batteries are encased in an epoxy resin along with the rest of the guts

I learned to live with the light in my dash, and the single "ding" at startup. I covered the light up with electrical tape. The stupid sensors were too sensitive for my tastes anyway. One less gadget I didn't need, and now don't worry about.

Have to agree with you on this one. Great idea to cover it up.

I replaced my left rear two months ago and all the lights come on , on the dash Low tire , ESP, ABS, and it knocks out your auto pilot . ( Cruse Control)

Front Driver's was replaced this past Saturday (remnants of a damaging rock hit from ECS) and thankfully, it was a pretty trivial. $50 for the sensor from moparpartsamerical and $20 at the local tire shop and a break/replace the outside bead and check balance. It's not horrible for $70 once per wheel per 5 years (especially since you can probably get the install pro-bono if you're buying tires, at the same shop).

I know I never thought I'd need them but it's real piece of mind for me to know (when I'm not necessarily the driver...) if the tire pressure drops unexpectedly.

Those of us with older (pre-06) KJs can get away with ignoring it, but those with 06 and later KJs require TPMS by law (and may fail inspection without it working) and as noted above traction/stability control and cruise control will not function if TPMS isn't working.

Not all 06's had TPMS. My 06 Sport doesn't have it and traction control and cruise work just fine.

My (05/2006) 2006 does not have TMPS. It didn't reach 100% mandated until 9/07

I posted in here and didn't even think about how this would affect me in just a few short days. I put my new tires and rims on and now the light is on. I didn't think I even had tire pressure sensors.

Now my light is on. So your choice is to either buy 5 sensors every time you buy an extra set of rims or live with the light? The black tape thing sounded like a plan but now I look and the light is about 3" behind the cluster bezel. Can't exactly cover it up well.

$50 per sensor plus labor for a system that I don't even want is not going to happen.

Any chance I can disable the system all together?

What is the frequency transmitted by the tyre pressure sensor? I will build a circuit to transmit the frequency.

The KK uses 315MHz for state side KK's and 433MHz for export models.......

wonder if you just take them all out of your tires and put them in a bag in the glove box if it'll freak out or not.. becuase then they are all at the same pressure and close enough to be sensed.

also.. if it comes down to it. you could always take apart the dashboard and either tape the light from behind the dash for the low tire light or take out the light its self.

Unless you could pressurize the bag and make it move, it would work

That's funny about the bag thing. When I changed out my stock rims and tires for different ones w/out TPMS the old ones were still in the garage and it took my truck 3 days to finally turn the TPMS light on the dash, I was hoping to fool it but I had to shut the truck off and it would turn on other places than just my garage and those stock tires weren't there. So I guess I need an 06 or older Jeep to have full control without all the nanny lights coming on?? :furious:

That frequency thing is interesting.
That is, as I understand it, the frequencies that garage door controllers & lots of other remote contrrolled gadgets operate on in their respective regions of the world.
Seems a solution could be looming.
Also did more research - yeah some of the KJ's have the TPMS function switched off electronically.

I don't think I have it but if that frequency is used this could be easily fooled!
A mercury switch operating a 433Mhz sender (or other frequency) could fool the thing......just sitting under the seat or something.
The rockin' o' the truck wud operate it randomly & send the signal.

Cheers All

Guys in Dayton Ohio fixed mine for me. Took apart the instrument cluster and inserted half of a vacuum plug into the cavity above the LED. Can't see the light anymore. If you have the type that effects other systems, this doesn't work of course.

No sensors on mine! Had to go check to make sure. What's the problem with just having a simple tire gauge. Stupid nanny state.
