I am a 7th grade science teacher and our school is having a Read-o-Thon. In short, I am being asked to read a book about every 2 weeks. I am about to finish my book that has several short stories about dogs and was wondering if that are any good nonfiction books LOST folks might recommend.

You might try reading Dale Brown books. Kind of military scifi/high tech. I have read all his books and I am not an avid reader.

Also the book Sahara by Clive Custler was a great book with some interesting twist on history. The movie didn't do the book justice.

Nonfiction ... that kind of blows Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" out of the list of contenders :D

How about a book by an anthropologist venturing into the jungle to study and live among the Yanomama tribe? "Into the Heart: One Man's Pursuit of Love and Knowledge among the Yanomama Tribe".

book on Amazon also available softcover.

Or this book:

Tiny Dancer: it's a book about a young burn victim in Afghanistan ... how she was helped along by several people (american soldier who took her to the medic against general orders, State Dept., politicians, doctors) --- basically a story of hope and caring.
Tiny Dancer on Amazon

Neither of which is about Jeep or off-roading, unless you consider "off the beaten path" to be about equivalent :D

Well, if you're reading the books to the class, ignore these suggestions, but if they're for you, check out "Black Hawk Down" by Mark Bowden. It's sort of lengthy, but an extremely good book. Everything's 100% true, but reads better than any fiction novel I've ever read. I want to read "Killing Pablo" by the same author, but I haven't gotten to read it yet. It's about how our government worked with various groups to eliminate Pablo Escobar, it looks like a really good book too.

These are not to be read to the class. I just need something to read to "model reading behavior." I asked if LOST forums counted and was told they don't.

So you're a guinea pig then? How come no sci-fi in the list? :D

I read A LOT of sci-fi/fantasy in high school and college. Lately I have found autobigraphies and history (any nonfiction for that matter) is a great way to learn and be entertained. It isn't that one can not learn from fiction, I am just really into my jeep atm and would love to find a book I can read while I work.

Read a Jeep book. There is a great book I had to read for school (I'm a Sr. in HS) called "The Story of Jeep". Search it on Amazon.

It's Yanomamo tribe. They did a documentary on the professor bringing back a woman from the tribe and she lived in NY City. She didn't live there long and she went back to her tribe.

I stand half-corrected - they are known by both names: Yanomamo and Yanomama. I read about them in my Anthropology class. They had no immunity to anything found in the outside world and our invasion of their space has caused many deaths due to common colds and worse.

Great reading. They were stone age primitive only up to about 20 yrs ago.

Isaac's Storm - The Drowning of Galveston by Erik Larson was pretty good. It documents everything leading up to the hurricane that destroyed Galveston in 1900. Isaac Cline was the head meterologist and got a bit cocky and ignored every warning of the storms severity. I was in Galveston a few years ago and was amazed at the flood markers showing the height and range of the water and couldn't stop reading that book.

If it's non-fiction try Clive Cussler's (wrote Sahara, Raise the Titanic and other Dirk Pitt novels) he has 2 non fiction books that are excellent. Sea Hunters 1 & 2 (I think 1 is better). He basically takes the real life account of finding ancient lost ship wrecks and interweaves into the true life search a fictionalized (based on fact) account of the crew during the last days of the ship before it was wrecked. Very cool and interesting. Plus his life story is really interesting. He's like a real life character out of one of his books.

Should you consider the DaVinci Code, I would recommend the book that brought the concept of the Holy Grail being a person rather than an object (and the basis of the fictional DaVinci Code) to the mainstream. It is "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln. Unfortunately, I can't really recommend much "interesting" non-fiction reading because I have a Bachelor's degree in History and many of my classes focused on Medieval European history.

Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach. It sounds kinda sick and morbid, but it's realy not. It's actually very humorous, and it's written very well. It's about what society/science does with people after they have left us, both throughout history and what's up and coming. It's also very respectful about the subject.

Under the Banner of Heaven or Into the Wild by John Krakauer. Under the Banner of Heaven is about Fundametalist Mormons and the murder of a mother and her baby by two brother who were told to by God (Once again, seems morbid - but it's not, I'm starting to see a trend...). Into the Wild is about a young man who wasn't happy with his life so he hitchicked around the US and finally ended up near Denali National Park to "live in the wild" by himself, but he didn't survive. It's the story of what happened to him the las two years of his life.

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. Very funny. It's about Mr. Bryson's venture down the Applacian trail in the Eastern U.S. But Mr. Bryson has his views about things that happen politically and he makes sure you know them.

A Walk Across America or Looking For Alaska by Peter Jenkins. Both are excellent. They'll make you laugh and cry and want to see places you've never seen, and hear people's random stories when you're done. A Walk Across America is the story of his personal journey from Maryland (I think) to Louisiana in the te 70's. And Looking for Alaska is about his time in AK in 2001 I believe, and the places he went ant the people he met while he was here.

Those are some of my personal favorites, and they are all non-fiction (sorry, not jeep related though...) - although sometimes very opinionated. Hope you decide to use one or two, I think they are awesome reads!
