My jeep doesnt have the tow pack and ive always wanted the engine driven fan. I would like to know if i need to get a new pully of if the fan fits on my current pully. it just doesnt look like there is enough room to fit a fan in there. Heres some pics and if someone can, take some pics of your pully and fan, along with your electric fan so i can see if they are the same. Pics i took.

If I get the chance today I will take some pics for you. I didn't know that you still had a fan shroud without having the mechanical fan. |

Some jeeps dont, Mine does. I think they started doing that on the 04's. I wanted to make sure that was the right one also, i didnt now if they used a different shroud, electric fan and pully on mine. |

Aight, ive been calling around to different dealerships tring to figure all this out and they had a different electric fan part number for jeeps with heavy duty cooling. So if you all can when you take pictures, get a picture of your electric fan so i can compare it to mine. I only need pictures from people with heavy duty cooling, thats with the mech. fan. |

If I am not mistaken, I think you get the engine fan when you buy the tow package. I know you can buy the HD cooling package seperate. I think it about $275. I am looking into it because it also comes with the external tranny cooler. |

Hmm, the dealership never said anything like this. I may call them back tomorrow. The 2004 libby already has the tranny cooler, just not the power steering cooler. Ill call them and see if they know anything of it. |

Just as a heads up, an engine driven fan too close to the radiator can put a hole in your radiator during a deep water crossing. If the engine bay gets enough water, it turns into a propeller and the blades get pulled forward making a nice round hole in your radiator. edit to add link where I read this, didnt make it up! http://www.offroaders.com/info/tech-corner/reading/water-crossing.htm |

I have a mechaical fan. I can take some pictures of it tonight when I get home from work (if it's not raining too hard also) Personally, I'd rather have the e-fan* because it doesn't rob horsepower and it doesn't have to run all the time. That means the engine warms up faster and there is less stress on the water pump (read: no leaks later on.) I got my jeep with the tow package because I use my Jeep mainly for towing and small amounts of off-roading. After 4 good years of service, I still love it! *Note: I assume the e-fan has the same CFM rating as the mechanical one. |

I would like to have that pull of the mech. No matter if its not engaged, its still pulling air. Im worried about the tranny overheating. |

I see your point. I'll take some pictures when I get out of work and post them up for you. Just as an FYI - I have never had any trans temp problems. I pull around a 6'x12' enclosed trailer about 2 times a summer. I don't know the exact weight of the trailer but it's very heavy and the Liberty does a good job. Granted Michigan is a really flat state. |

Oh, and while there have been situations where a mechanical fan has pulled itself into the radiator (though I've not heard of this happening on a KJ) several members of L.O.S.T. have reported their electric fans failing after lots of water crossings or mud. Personally I'll keep my redundancy and deal with the (very) slight performance hit and radiator damage risks. |

I'll sound like a newbie for saying this, but I didn't know of the e-fan until I went out and took those pictures. At first, I was confused but then I understood why I have never seen my trans temp light come on.... I've worked my Liberty pretty hard but it's been a great Jeep! |

You dont have to rub it in about having both fans and not overheating!! lol jk, it seems that i would not have to get a new electric fan bc the mech fan is very small, always thought it was bigger than that. Thanks for the pics!! Edit: Can you all believe this cost around $216 new from the dealer! The clutch alone is $141. I just dont think its worth that much money. I dont know what to do?!?! I was wanting to get a locker and some other small stuff for it, like a bug shield, tcase skid, locking gas cap, and a block heater. |

Save the fan for last.... You can piece all of the parts together over time while you do other things. Try searching J/Y's for parts and stuff. It will make it so much more rewarding. |

What is J/Y's? Ive got the hitch+ wiring. Ive towed with it in 90F weather but the load was only around 2k. When we go camping that gets up to 3k and the hills are huge. Weve got a 94 grand cherokee with the 4.0 and it gets down to 45mph on some of the hills. The libby does much better than the I-6 though. |

Jeepjeepster: Try auto parts stores (not the dealer) for the fan and clutch. They'll probably be much cheaper. |

I too have always wanted that mechanical fan until a jeep mechanic told me I did not need one for what I would be doing and that it would rob some horse power and decrease my gas mileage even more. I tow a 4000 lb. 18 ft. deck boat up and down the hills of southern Indiana, northern Indiana, and parts of Ohio and never have had any trouble with overheating of engine or transmission. The mechanic told me unless I was to be butt deep in mud with a big horse trailer in tow and trying to get it out or doing some very serious 4x4ing ( high rpm at very low speeds) to not worry about it! the cooling system will handle it just fine. |
