I realize this would better go in electronics but I thought it would get more views here. My question is those of you that also have the DVD based factory Navagation radio. Have any of you ever upgraded your disc? mine is the AC release. Naveteq tells me that is 6 versions old. there have been 4 anual versions and 2 mid years releases. The current release is AI. I know I could get a gps thats got newer maps for less than the $199. they are asking for a new map dvd and I have a Navagon with maps from 2008 I got before buying the Jeep but I hate using it. it never stays on the window and you have to worry about it getting stolen. I see there are some on ebay too some newer than mine, has anyone tried buying from ebay? |

never heard even thought about looking on ebay... will do though... i'm gunna see what the dealer has to say i mean it would make sense that they got a discount on it cause they have to purchase the maps to put int he vehicle since they do it in bulk. If not i'm gunna wait til the newest map comes out then upgrade...( once every 2 years isnt too bad... 100 a year for new maps) |

Got mine on Ebay for the RB1 and it was cheap. i think i payed $30 which is a steal for what the dealer wants. The disk was modified so it could be used while driving. ebay is the way to go |

That is awsome but I am more intrested in newer maps what version of the maps was on the disc? I have the RB1 too. I am wondering if the DVD can be copied I may try to copy mine and see if it will run on a copy. Technicially copying your own disc is legal so that you have a back up should the origanal become damaged. I have to look at how much data is on the disc, It may require a dual layer dvd. |

My navi disk came as a burnt copy which i believe is version AE. obviously it can be done and from the quick 2 second of research i did you will need a dual layer burner. i have been telling myself to make up a back up copy since i got it but have never got around to it. Guess i should put that on my new years resolutions list |

Thanks for that link....very intresting but I have an older version than AE so I cant use that hack. Ae was released in Sept 2006 and I have AC...... wow my maps are old and probably were when the jeep was new. I have been looking on ebay for cheap discs but I have Not found many that are under 100 that are not much newer and some even olde than mine. I found an AH disc for 179 and an AI for a little less. I really would not care if it was a copy, hacked or not as long as it was had maps that were not much more than 2 years old. I don't see any copied discs on ebay now. I will keep looking. |

I have the RB1 and can't remember what the NAV disc version is....but it's old. Lots of the streets in my area are new and don't exist on the maps. I tried burning the disc for another Lost member, but it never worked, Dual layer or not. However, I have a Mac, so it may have been part of the problem. I would love a new version, but the dealer here wants $300.00 for the disk. That buys a pretty sweet garmin, Tom Tom etc. Post up when you find your final solution. I can't imagine they will continue to do update disks for too long? |

moto-scoot wrote: Thanks for that link I am going to try to buy that and see what happens. That looks like a newer version of what Rt_power is talking about. I was searching for that but I never found that one or I would have ordered it. I will post back what happens when I get it in. |

The Liberty came with a few Nav options. 1. the RB1 built in with the radio 2. The NavMate. stand alone unit. This unit is no longer made and no longer updated. it used CD's. Here is a note, all new Garmin Nuvi units have a $119 life time update option now. Tom Tom units that are new enough cost $40 a year to stay current. Most Facotry unit that NavTeq support will cost you $199 to $379 per year to keep current. So for $100 to $300 you can get a nice Garmin unit with Life time updates. That is the best deal. This can go from car to car. You can even get maps for other countries as well. |

Since I have it I like having it build in.... There are some advantages of having it built in. 1 its always charged up and ready to go in the vehicle.... you cant forget to take it with you. 2 No cords no suction cup mounts.... my Navigon's never ever stayed on the window more than 20 or 30 miles most of the time un like the siruis radio mount. 3 less chance of it being stolen... I know several people that have had theirs stolen, usually the thief breaks a window that costs you 2x as much as the navi to replace and you have to fix the window and deal with that unpleasantness. disadvantages. 1 upfront cost added to new car 2 can't move to differnt car.... not that I care as I only have the Jeep. 3 higher cost to update...... but I think we may see this trend change as aftermarket navi updates get cheaper the onboad ones should as well becasue they want consumers to buy them and not shy away because of higher on going costs. |

I bought mine just for the fact of not having nothing hanging for the glass. yes i payed more for it then an aftermarket navi but for a factory unit i was and still am quite impressed with what it can do. |
