I would strongly suggest a read of the information contained in the attached link.
It is clearly apparent that some old practices regarding brakes that are still in vogue should NO LONGER be undertaken:

http://www.ebcbrakes.com.au/index.php/technical.html

Very applicable to us, seeming to need to renew brake discs probably too early even tho I found it whilst researching for another vehicle we own.

The reason was a need for new front discs after a service life of some 170 000kms with 0.57mm of "meat" left before the need for renewal. As usual miked / runout measured etc as part of my normal service practices.

Enjoy the read.

That has been the industry standard for almost 20 years here in the US.Rarely get preformed correctly since if a shop does the work they do not have time or a authorized test drive route to bed the pads correctly, the tech is not going to spend a couple of hours on a brake job that only pays 0.6-1 hours.

At least twenty years most of that I was taught when I went to Brake and Alignment school back in the mid 70s was sort of new information at that time.
But like Troy stated a mechanic doesn't get paid to break them in right and most drivers do the gas pedal on the floor until they see a red light then hard brake so no matter how they are installed they wear quickly.

Yep and the owners fault for overheating there brakes is about 90% of our brake comebacks for noise, they all have hot spotted rotors and then they get the luxury of buying new rotors then.

I may've been wrong but if one uses a mechanic the resposibility doesn't end there.

I am quite affronted by the the majority of the early responses.
Not everyone on this site is a mechanic/engineer.
and please forgive me for forgetting that the US is the hub of the universe.

I remind you that I choose to drive a Jeep.....and by the by use and prefer USA manufactured kit for the most part.

It is not that the trades are behind the US, it is that Joe public and many of our FELLOW JEEPERS are not so much in the know.
I thought we were here to help them grow their knowledge base.

Be a tad gracious please and help disseminate what is useful information pitched at a level that most can understand.
With NO DISRESPECT to these folks, they still work on their own vehicles and yet can, at times, be mechanically challenged.

Shouldn't we try to help them?

Sorry to have offended the Gods. :furious:
I'm outa here for a good while.
