My wife is stuck by a friends house after describing what sounds like a stuck caliper.
Any way to un stuck it?
Tap it with a hammer?
Go in reverse and hit the brakes?

Any suggestions will be helpful.
Heading over there now to check it out. Will check LOST when I get there.

Thanks

Bub

sometimes hitting one with a hammer will work but most times once it sticks then you need to r&r it. Also once it sticks it will more than likely do it again

Whew,glad that's over! <enjoying brewski>

Here's the story.

My wife and a co-worker were on their way home from Baton Rouge in the lib.She said about half way home on I-10 they heard a loud pop,and they thought that something hit the windshield(end up being bottom bolt from the pass side calliper).
After that nothing seemed out of the ordinary,so they continued on.When she came to her friends exit the brakes started acting up and making noise and vibrating the jeep(My wifes description to me over the phone as this started happening).I told her it sounded like a stuck caliper and to stay by her friends house till I come look at it.
Got there and put it in drive to see if I could tell which caliper was sticking.Put it in drive and let off the brakes and it would not go so I tapped the skinny a lil and POP!I hit the brakes and put it in reverse and it went back smooth, put it back in drive and it didn't moove,so I turned it off.Took off that tire and noticed a gouge in the inside of the rim, bout 3/8 wide the whole way around! What the hell!
First thought some type of foreign object must have wedged it's way in there, messed up the rim, then flew out.Didn't make sense.Started pulling and twisting on things,to see if anything was loose.Sure enough the bottom of the calliper fell down.Bottom bolt was gone.
With bottom bolt gone and the wheel spinning foreward, the bottom of the calliper was falling, binding into the rim and gouging it out.
Pulled the top bolt to see if it was try it in the bottom.Same bolt.I took it to Auto Zone and the guy didn't have anything that big.Suggested Home Depot.Went to HD and they went from 12 to 16 mm,and not inbetween. :furious: Bigger than a 12,not as big as 16!
Heading back to the Jeep,I thought that,"In Theory",If I put the Bolt in the bottom than if the top falls out, than it will drag instead of bind.
Got back, put the bolt in the bottom, put it in drive and no POP.Smooth.
Made my wife drive the truck and follow me back to the house.
Made it home, pulled the bolt off,ran to my Uncle Jorge's(Bill97redtj's dad and Eglin guide extraudinaire) house because he is a machinist and has a load of bolts.Ends up being a 14mm course thread @ 1 1/2" long.Threw it in and alls good for now.
Wifey and friend are dang lucky! :grim:

My question is that the bolt I replaced it with was a grade 8.8.The bolt that fell out is a grade 10.9.
Is the grade 10.9 a metric grade? Is it compairable with a grade 8.8 standard scale?
Also, what should these things be torqued to?

I'd like to put a shout out to my boy Mudd.Big up Big up.

Metric grade 8.8 = SAE grade 5

Metric grade 10.9 = SAE grade 8

Metric grade 12.9 = SAE grade 9

Glad you found out what it was and also got it repaired and everyone got home safely.
From the first post I thought it had locked up and was sitting somewhere with you just trying to find a way to get it home, which I guess you were
But in the end all is good. I have heard of a few of them coming out. When was the last time that the brakes were apart?

Make sure you get that wheel looked at and possibly replaced. It would suck for it to fail on you while driving!
