| Post subject: | Transfer Case |
The other day when I was under my Jeep I noticed a small patch under my transfer case where the two halfs meet together. I assume the two come apart, is there a gasket in there that can be changed? If so is it something I can do at home. Thanks |

Its sealed with RTV. Don't know how hard it is to take it apart or anything though. |

Not hard to do, NP231 - Drop Rear Drive shaft - Drop Front Drive Shaft - Remove Front yoke (think its 36mm) - Remove Bolts from Transfer case housing - Carefully seperate the two halves - Clean mating edges with a solvent (brake and parts cleaner) - Apply RTV - reassemble Gears and chain on the half that is not in the jeep and slide in as an assembly - Put it back together. - Fill with 2 quarts of ATF +4 Depending on mileage of the Jeep you may want to look into a new chain. I believe the chain is only allowed 1/32 of stretch before it needs replaced. Last one I got was from Mountain valley customs out of PA I'm thinking it was about $170 not totally sure though. I just know that was the cheapest place I could find. |

It's much easier doing the split seal when the t-case is out of the vehicle and then place input side into a 5 gallon bucket, makes life much simpler. Oh and use aircraft grade RTV,the red stuff that never get's hard, stay's a gel form. It's outrageously expensive but the best to use for a t-case split seal. |

I can split, replace the chain, seal and be back on the trail in 1.5 hrs off the floor. Its really not that hard. By the time you pull the T-case I'll be pulling it outta the shop. |

I believe what Troy suggested was appropriate for most shade trees with less experience in working on things while under the vehicle |
