Post subject:  Oil in airbox

I remember someone asking a while back but can't find it. While installing my HID kit yesterday I took the airbox out. I noticed the sponge in there was somewhat soaked in oil, not sure what its for? I knew it would be oily however is a lot more then normal, soaked.

Also what is the pcv valve for?

TIA

the sponge?

if there's a sponge style "crankcase filter" in our airboxes then .. perhaps i should hit the parts store like now, well.. i guess it's not that much of a rush since it hasn't been in there for the last known 40k miles or so :(

do you by chance have one of those oiled sponge K&N style drop in airfilters from the prior owner and didn't realize it maybe?

Think of the pvc valve as um..

ok, look at the intake as a vacuum, the bottom side of the pistons as low pressure, top side as high pressure, you don't want the bottom side pressurized or the pistons do more work trying to cycle, plus an engine makes more vacuum at low RPM's than at high RPM's so it works like a valve at higher RPM's so that crankcase pressures don't rise, if the pvc valve sticks open eventually itll foul your plugs up, if it fails closed, thinks like your oil dipstick can blow out (not likely with the hood closed but it happens) and oil can get pushed out of breather hoses

if you got a bunch of engine oil on your air filter your pvc valve is stuck closed, time for a new pvc valve and a airfilter perhaps?

Thats the breather. If it is soaked I would get a new one and a PCV valve too.

Open the box and look on the right side. I can't remember if it was on here or Kjcountry but someone else asked about it and few months ago.

i think we got it figured out.. well, figured out other than my brain is hitting on fewer cylinders than usual cause i've been up for a day or three with little to no sleep

apparently there is a crankcase filter, which if it's loaded up with oil, could be a good sign needs a pcv valve and a new crankcase filter

and it's QUITE apparent

that i need to get more sleep . Soon :P

Don't remember the part number but the one I got from autozone was $5.99

or you can do what I did, and spend 1.50 at westlake ace hardware, or comparable, on a filter for a 2 cycle engine.
It is green and there is enough left over for 2 more filters.

Yup, there is a sponge in the airbox of my '03. By the way, since it hasn't been answered although it was asked: PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation.

Yea I didn't know how else to discribe it other then sponge. however got the PCV replaced thanks to jarhead and "made" a filter as rip discribed.
