| Post subject: | Engine knocking after oil change. |
Hi all, first post outside of the introduction forum and it's on a bad note. I changed my oil over the weekend replacing it with 4 qts. of 5w30 and 1 qt. of Lucas oil stab. and used a WIX filter. All went well until I started it up. As soon as it started it rapped bad for a few seconds, I know it's normal for it to be noisy until the new oil gets through the engine but this was louder than I've ever heard an engine do before. After it quieted down there was a distinctive knock that was not there before. Now when I first start it I don't hear the knock until the RPMs get down to normal idle and if you let it idle or drive it for a bit it eventually goes away. Any clues as to what has gone wrong? |

I assume you double checked the oil level to make sure it was "full"? If it's full of fresh oil and not leaking anywhere I'm stumped. How long was it since your last oil change before this one? How many miles on it? I've used 10W30 instead of 5W30 on my high mileage engine (which blew up last month so what do I know, right?) with the reasoning that thicker oil protects a worn out engine better. |

Oh yeah checked it about 10 times now lol and it's perfect... it was changed about 2700 miles previous to this time and before that was while the car lot had it, I just bought it not long ago. also I forgot to add the mileage just rolled over 113,000 |

To be honest....I really don't think the Luucas is real substitute for motor oil... |

The lucas is to thick for your oil pump to handle at idle... the reason the knock goes away is because the oil warms up and thins out... I'd do another oil change this time with out lucas |

I'm (obviously) not the most mechanically gifted person here so please excuse me if this is a dumb question but can I use the same filter considering it's only a couple days old now or should I start fresh on that too? Do you guys think there is any damage already done? BTW thank you for the very fast replies it's greatly appreciated. |

Hate to tell you but I would change it all, oil and filter, use only oil this time , hopefully you have not ran it too far and starved the engine at any time |

Using the same filter won't hurt, but there will be a quart of heavy weight oil in there, so it's up to you as to if you want to use the filter or not. I don't want to say there isn't any damage, but it is very unlikely because of the properties of the lucas |

Can't you drain all of the old oil out of the old filter?? |

The little amount left in the filter won't hurt anything. I use Lucas products on a regular basis and believe they are far superior to any other "Snake-oil" out there. Just fill the crankcase with 5 quarts of 5W-30, preferably a high quality oil such as Mobil 1 and a good filter like a Purolator Pure-1. You should be good to go after that. |

Just replace the filter to be safe, JMO... |

The oil was only thicker at start up and even then just barely. It was still 30W when up to operating temp. Remember this....thicker oil provides more oil pressure, but less flow. So if the oil used was too thick, based on what clearances you have, you could actually starve an engine of oil. |

Well, just finished changing it. Immediate result didn't change anything it's still knocking but we'll see if that changes. |

adding lucas anything to good quality lubes is a waste of money. Don't waste your money, just run good lubes to begin with. |

I used lucas in my Outback for a while with Castrol 5w30. it never caused any problems with that car but then sometimes Subaru's boxer engines like the oil a little thicker. I stopped using it due to the cost and it didn't make a difference I could notice. |

I've run Lucas products without any issues either, but I have seen problems when people put their thick additives in FIRST then the oil and it doesn't drain down fast enough. If I use them I put 3 qts in then the HEATED additive and top it off with the remaining oil. I believe Lucas would have had a hard time becoming such a large, highly-endorsed company if their products could be proven to damage vehicles, though I agree that they are situational and not a part of every oil change. I cannot keep Z-Max on the shelf and it is up to 40.00 for the 2 product set. And when my wife's Liberty rolled 80k I did a flush and switched her from Valvoline's synthetic blend to MaxLife with a 6-cyl can of Restore, but no additives since. I just think like everything else, there's a time and a place. |

I always put the oil or most of it in first, then the additives . so for a 5 qt oil change with 1 qt of lucas I would put in 3 quarts then the lucas then the last quart or 4 quarts of oil then the lucas |
