so a while back i replaced the parking brake shoes in my liberty ( the pads had started falling off the old shoes lol). when i put the new brake shoes back in i had a lot of trouble getting everything connected properly, i got it all in there but could not get the brakes to work properly. i dont know if its as simple as adjusting the star wheel properly, or if i just didnt get the mechanism placed right when i put it back between the brake shoes. im sorry its kind of hard to explain what i was dealing with. anyways, when i pull my brake lever up it goes up about half way then is very stiff, but brakes are not engaged at all.

is there anyone who has done a parking brake replacement successfully who can maybe add some insight as to what i might be doing wrong. havent had a lot of time to take the jeep apart lately, but want to get a better idea of what i need to do to get it right when i do finally find time.

I think everybody has had problems with the parking brake in some form or another from what i've read. I still do. have one of those clutch things in the parking lever that won't stay snug. i have to "prime" my parking brake to get it to work. bear with me as i am not a mech. and do not know all the correct terminalogy

I had the same happen to me when i changed the rear parking brake. Took forever to get the rotor off. and when i finally did the shoes/pads fell to the ground in pieces. (wasn't much left of the pads or the brackets that held the pads) Got the shoes in place then the rotor over them, and same thing happened. Brakes would not work. Turned out the parking brake was locked up/ rusted where the cable goes into the housing at the wheel. when the parking brake lever is pulled, this pulls the cable which in turn moves this little lever thing and pushes/ expands the shoes to snug up on the inside of the the rotor. I would recommend getting a second set of hands, taking the rear end appart again and watching to see if this lever is moving/expanding while the other works the parking brake. Mine was rusted in the expand position so when i put the new pads on, it wasn't fitting properly and didn't work. Also destoryed a new pair of parking shoes. I ended up replacing new rear rotors and pads just to get things right.
hope this helps. if i need to be more specf. let me know.

thanks for the info, i think mine may have been frozen up as well. my brakes previously worked somewhat but just barely before i changed the pads. looking at the mechanism that spreads the brake shoes i was confused on how it worked, i was thinking it should move some and not be a frozen hinge. but since it had worked somewhat before i thought maybe it was just supposed to be a solid unit and i just didnt understand how it worked lol. i tried getting it to move fun with no luck, i will try harder next time to get that to move maybe use some WD40 on it or something.
