So I have a line on an xj 8.25, 29 spline, 4.10 axle.
I want to get the 4.10s out of it and regear.
What do I need to do to swap the gears? Is it something I can do in my driveway or should I have a shop or someone with knowledge do it?

FL has a bit of a talent vacuum problem so I cannot recommend anyone specifically but it's not something your should do in you driveway. Take it to a shop after you pay your dad back for the blown engine repair.

I know people who will do it for beer.

And my dad didn't pay doo doo on my engine.....

As for why to re-gear. Better mileage, and I'll be getting bigger tires soon anyways. If the deal is right there infront of me I want to jump on it.
Even if it sits in the garage until I get front 4.10s

i did 4.10s but I didn't even go bigger than 245/75...I had my brothers 32/10.50 trxus mtrs on for a week with 4.10s and they sucked!

if you get a deal on it, might as well sell it. not that many people running 4.10s unless they needed or wanted bigger tires. your fine with normal gears for the right tire size (245/75)

Does your beer buddy have the right tools to set them up? Are you replacing the bearings/seals etc when you're doing it. I can set up gears but when it comes time to do it I have someone with the proper tools do it so I know its perfect, not close.

And of course you know you have to drop the front diff all the way out to do them, so another 5 hours if you've never dropped one

The guy I would have do it does have all the correct tools and etc. He put the gears in his purpose built CJ and his sons beast TJ.

But it looks like it will be a while until I can get the gears.
While I was looking up how to swap them the whole axle assembly was sold.

And If I were doing it I would be getting a master install kit.

Like I stated on the other board you need a special spanner wrench for the 8.25,neither the CJ or TJ ever came with the 8.25 so he may not have the required tools to do gears in a 8.25.You also may need a case spreader for the D30A,I had access to one and needed it to swap the open carrier for the DTT.

I can set up gear sets but I pay someone else to do them for me,to much hassle.I'd rather get a root canal done with no numbing then set up gears.

Woooooord....

I did it once and that was just enough to know it was worth paying a pro. Save up the cash and take it to a driveline shop. Your friend's driveway probably doesn't have much of a warranty.... and this is one area you NEED a warranty because a slight (and Troy can probably tell you just how slight we're talking) installation mishap can mean it explodes 20 miles down the road and you're skrood.

Yep as little as 0.01" can spell disaster for your gear set and whole diff.

In the below link is how to set up gears(read all of it,very long),they used a D60 but the same principle applies to all diffs and a instead of shims the 8.25 uses adjustable sleeves which make it easier, not a whole lot but about 5% easier but does require another special tool.
