install the filter and seal as an assembly. Damage to
the transmission will result.

I've got a 42RLE. The filter comes with an O'ring. What I've done is insert the o'ring up into the cavity, it seats nicely. Then I put the filter up there and at first I was trying like hell to get the filter tube to go INTO the o'ring, but I'm pretty sure you can't get it in. So now it is bolted up to the correct torque, sits firm and flat against the trans. I believe that the O'ring is just up against the front edge of the tube, is that correct? If not, what should I be doing here....

I don't know the answer to your question, here is where I got all my info for the tranny fluid change
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=31642&hilit=how+to+change+fluid+transmission+fluid+change&start=20

I have the 42rle too and when I did it I put the round rubber o ring on the neck of the filter, I can't remember why but it seemed like that's where it belonged (maybe there was an indention for it or something, or that's where the old one was). If I did it wrong I would like to know too.

I put mine on the tube then put the filter on.

Well that's what I thought would need to be done, but this other way was stated in a how-to on jkjc and went uncontested. Now I'm worried that I need to take it out and redo it....PITA.

Trophyslayer is correct for the 45rfe,it uses a seal more like axle seal than an O-ring. Must be seated prior to filter.

If the tranny goes into gear ok and doesnt feel like its slipping then dont worry about it. If you think its slipping at all then go ahead and redo it.

Where did you get ATF+4? Ive notice no one carries it anymore. Walmart, advance, Ive not seen it anymore lately.

Everywhere I went had it. I do know that carquest has their own label and it is pretty cheap, Advance had their own, but I bought Castrol at advance.

It seems to be operating fine. At low speeds it seems to want to stay in low gears, but I'm thinking it always did that, and that now I'm just paying attention.

Gah! You sound just like me. I do something to my KJ, or it comes out of the shop, and I swear something is making a different noise, or doing something different, but then I think I'm merely paying closer attention. Then I spend the next 30,000 miles wondering. Sometimes I wish I could just stop listening and drive my truck.
