I'm switching back to my stock air intake. Currently running a K&N FIPK. After taking a good look at the design, I decided the stock intake scoop will actually pull in more cold air than any under-the-hood type cone filter. I'm kicking myself since that things been on there for about 6 years  :furious: :banghead: :dizzy: Call it a moment of clarity  Live and learn right? So I'm wondering what air filter you smart guys are using. I was going to go for an AEM Dryflow, however, apparently they don't make one that fits the Liberty stocker. I was considering the K&N after that since the filters ain't all that bad in my opinion. I've also looked at True Flow which is a foam filter. I've heard a lot of guys talk about the Amsoil filter too, but some guys will also claim anything that says Amsoil is better no matter what... So what's the general consensus? Should I stick to common Wix / Purolator paper filters, or spend the $ on a reusable?

When I bought my KJ my air filter was total trash. I drove with it for a few days like until I happened to Wal-Mart to get a new one. Replaced it with a normal Fram paper replacement, and it was like night/day. IMHO the paper filters are the best for blocking debris and still giving you good performance. Just my :2cents:

used to use fram, now use amsoil

experiencing less dirt/fouling of intake air sensors and components

After trying several over the years I switched to Amsoil
Nothing better overall! :!: :!: :!:

Amsoil.

I have used paper, they work if you change them every oil change or 6 months. K&N work well out of the box, but you need to re-oil them and that is where you can run into trouble. Too little oil and they will not filter propely, too much oil and you will really mess up the Mass Air Flow sensor and that can cause fuel economy problems among other things. The Amsoil filter is good for 2 years and they are a little cheaper than the K&N (Canadian pricing) and you do not have to buy the K&N re-oiling kit to maintain the filter.

Ya gotta love BITOG! Here's a shot in the jaw for you Amsoil lovers  As he states later in the article, "The poorer flowing filters, remove more particles, and the better flowing filters remove less particles. If you think about it, that conclusion passes any and all common sense tests, so it is not surprising. There are many that will be shocked by the results, that should not be though". I couldn't agree more :P Since I like a little better flowing engine (since after all, an engine is little more than an air pump) I'll stand on the middle ground between filtration and performance. I'm sticking with the K&N drop-in. Sounds like the Amsoil is a b*tch to service, anyway.

I have used K&N in everything for years. I even use those stupid little breather filters. But, I think I'll be switching to Amsoil.

Use what you want, but the amsoil filters for our vehicles, if you didn't notice by comments earlier in the thread, you don't service (ie: oil)

kept fouling various intake / tb sensors with oil style K&N drop in's

Well the test you linked was comparing k&n and a different amsoil filter than is for our vehicles

There's been plenty of official tests, other than rat-lab laboratory tests

Plenty of us that use Amsoil filters do our own tests, called Didn't replace sensor_003 / Didn't have to clean sensor_003

or my favorite

the k&n drop in dyno'ed worse than the amsoil drop in of the same type, however marginally

I do run a K&N oiler cone on one of my pulling tractors tho, but I have the convenience of being able to remove the carb and wash it out in a varsol vat.

run what ya want, it's your investment :P

That is a test on the old style Amsoil filter which was similar to the K&N at the time. The new version Amsoil is a dry element similar to the AEM. BITOG doesn't know everything.

Servicing the Amsoil is easy... throw old one in trash... throw new one in Jeep...

Seems to filter better than a sock full of lawn clippings...

Ok, ok, ok... I didn't know about the Amsoil being a dry filter. I thought it was as the one BITOG tested. :2cents: By the way, you can call it a "Rat Lab", however he's the only one out there investing his own money to find out what all the other companies won't tell you. To that you have to give him kudos whether you agree with his findings or not. Even if they are low-tech, his tests put the proof in the pudding. :2cents: With that being said, I am now considering switching to the Amsoil because of the fact it's a dry filter. My question is, how often should they be replaced, because I do know they're more expensive by far than your typical drop-in. Are they servicable/washable or 1-time use? As far as performance/flow goes, are they pretty comparable to the K&N's? Thanks again, everyone! This is why I love this forum

Post subject:  Re: Air filter preference

I tap mine out and air blast it a few times a year but mostly after those dusty runs that we are so fond of here in the desert. I have them on 4 diferent Jeeps and so far they seem to be doing a great job. I'd say that in a really dusty environment they would be good for at least a year of service if cleaned out a few times, in a less dusty area, probably fine for the 2 year time frame. Just my HO on that, if you want to know how well it is doing for sure, run a couple UOA's to verify if it is filtering out the nasties.

edit to add: for street or mostly street use applications, I'd have no problem believing the 4 year service life, but not so much for off road use.

Amsoil

I vaccuum mine every oil change

Post subject:  Re: Air filter preference

Amsoil here too. I blow it out every oil change with the air gun. Switched to it from the K&N drop-in that I had before it. K&N kept greasing down my MAF.

...and I know how to properly oil the K&N filters. I was not saturating it. I have run them on other cars and motorcycles for years with no issues. I even tried it with a very light, less than adequate, spraying of the filter charger. Still got and oily MAF.
