Just got back from a 2000+ mile trip. My KJ and I have driven the entire length of I-25, both directions, now! However, I don't think she likes the desert. As soon as I came out of the foothills in northern NM, the speedo died, taking my cruise control with it. Pulled off the interstate a couple miles later, checked over all the wiring I could think of. Nothing muddy, worn... everything looks normal. Got a CEL and the P0573 code, though. Called my brother and had him look up the code. Figured there must be something wrong with the brake switch. I was in kind of a hurry to get to El Paso for a pre-trial divorce hearing though. So, I kept going. Had to use the GPS I borrowed from my dad as a speedometer. Occasionally, after stopping for a few minutes, the speedo would work for a few miles until I was on my way back home. I had to stop for gas just after leaving the NM desert. About the same spot it died on the way south. Took about 10 miles before I noticed it, but the darn thing was working again. By the time I hit the CO/WY border, the CEL had gone away, even.

So, any ideas? What's failing? Or does my Libby just not like low elevations? ...flat land? ...cactus?

I looked around the internet and found these two. My bud that's a recently retired GM tech is suppose to come over later today. I'll bend his ear.

Thanks. Hopefully it's just the brake switch but, the speedometer failure is perplexing.

Anyone know if this would still be covered under warranty? I didn't buy it new and didn't get a detailed list of what was still covered, just a notice that the warranty had been transferred. It is an 05 that was originally bought in 05.

Unless it's an extended warantee or it sat on the lot for ever, it's out. We have a 06 and it ran out 5 months ago. It was 3 years or 36,000 miles.

My bud said it probably a speed sensor( he said about 6 inches from the rear drive shaft) . He said to check the output shaft from the transfer case for play (wear causes contact between the sensor and the shaft) and to check for damaged wire to the sensor but other than that there isn't much you can do except replacing the sensor.

Thanks, that was my original thought but, then the code it threw indicated the brake switch. Could be both going, I suppose.

I knew it was a 3/36 warranty on the drivetrain but, I thought there was a 7/70 for some other stuff? I just don't know. Thanks for the info.

Do you have ABS? maybe it's tied in that way.

I guess it could be tied in because of the disengage through touching the brakes. If the sensor is cheap enough, maybe you can throw one in and see what happens.

Not really sure what to do since it's working, atm. Don't want to change stuff until I know what's broken (breaking).

Hmm, I looked at the wiring near the sensor on the road and didn't notice anything but, I'll take a closer look around the e-brake cable when it's light enough to see, tomorrow.

Just made the trip again for the actual trial and once again the speedo died. At exactly the same spot. P0501 trouble code this time. The speedo did come back on again but not until I got back to Denver. The CEL has not gone away this time, though. Looking like my speed sensor may be going out.
