I just replaced the CV joint and the inner front axle shaft and it works fine in 2WD and when it goes into 4WD i get a clicking noise

i can move the whole assembly (cv joint and axle) 1/4 in into the transfer case

any help is appreciated at this point

You should not have that much play in it if your pushing it into the front diff housing.
Hopefully you set the CV and half shaft right.
When in 2wd, you are not getting too much power to the CV's. when your in 4wd, your power is great and if the cv is hosed or not installed correctly it will clunk and can make a whopping sound at higher speeds.


I would recheck your work ASAP. cuz if it is not installed correctly, you will cause alot of damage
