Post subject:  Burning Oil

Hey all,

I am smelling burnt oil when I sit idle, or after I park the Jeep. But I do not see any leaks (engine oil, diff oil, P/S, etc) within the engine bay. Also, I don't see any smoke from the tail pipe.

What are some of your suggestions for troubleshooting the cause of this?

Thanks!

PS. 150k miles, synthetic motor oil every 5k, synthetic diff and Tcase oil changed every 20 - 25k.

I would check the PCV, Valve seals, and head gasket.

Valve seals will likely require a compression test to check.

but you can usually self check your head gasket by checking the oil. if it appears milky, your head gasket is leaky/blown.

One of my neighbors was complaining about smelling oil when stopped at a light, pull in the garage etc and they had never changed the PVC out in almost 100,000 miles, I changed their plugs, air filter, oil and new PVC for them and they said the smell went away right away??
Doesn't take much of a leak to say hit the exhaust to cause a smell sometimes. May take a light and mirror and check up around everything real close

first things first

check and make sure the rubber wiring gromet on the drivers side under the dash hasn't pushed/pulled through to one side of the firewall or the other

this does happen, and when it does it will allow normal engine fumes into the vehicle

Thanks fellas.

Voodoo: I haven't noticed an off color in the engine oil, but I'll look more closely this time.
Tom: I haven't changed the PCV yet either at 150k... I'll look into that. Its got to be a small leak somewhere because I can smell it, but can't see any evidence of it. Perhaps a real close inspection will be needed.
Jarhead: Not really noticable from inside the cab. Only with windows down, or after I walk away after it's parked.

Plugged PCV valve will cause it to push out places it shouldn't...

did this start after you had the oil replaced?
Some times I spill a drop or 2 when I fill it back up. and sometimes thats all it takes

Yeah, if the PCV isn't functioning properly, pressure can build up enough to push oil out where it normally doesn't leak. I get the same thing from my Fireturd, I do have a small leak around rear main, but never leaves a dop anywhere, but enough I can smell it when sitting still.
It maybe cause you live out "there".. that somerville/trenton area :jester: :ROTFL: :goink:

Trenton's not a bad place, I lived there for a year or so. But I still don't usually claim Somerville, rather I tell people that I live "outside of Seven Mile."

By the way, I replaced the PCV valve yesterday along with spark plugs and some fuel injector cleaner. It's the least I can do for the old 3.7 that's gotten me 150,000 miles (rolled over 150k this week).

Just a quick update. Replacing the PCV and/or changing the spark plugs seem to have done the trick. I have yet to notice the burning oil smell listed in the original post.

Thanks fellas.
