Ok guys..im a newbie here...first post... My 2005 liberty has 203K miles on it and I want to take it on a road trip (to Mexico). Soooo Ive never had anything major done to it. No mods, no engine or tranny rebuilds.... One tune up with tranny flush at 150K Aside from the air filter and oil ive never replaced pretty much anything on it...(still has original shocks) OK what recommendations to get fixed before a road trip? What usually goes out on the KJs...? talk to me... |

203,000 miles  one tuneup one trans flush Where do you start?  Before I would go on a trip like that, another trans flush, tuneup, oil change transfer case fluid change, front and rear diffs changed , new shocks / springs all around ..........and the list goes on I'm still sitting here with my mouth open with one tune up  We need pictures for sure, also want to see how low its sitting

ok cool...at least i have somewhere to start.... ill post some pics soon...not too terrible...but yes...saggin like a....(you get the picture)... and i didnt baby it either...lots of mud in the summer and snow in the winter.... (oh my front driveline went out but that was fixed long ago)(its all coming back to me....) |

Resfink, Since your not stating where your starting from and ending up the trip coule be from 30 miles to over 6,000 miles so figuring that it will be a fair trip I would look at the usual things that can stop you. At 200,000 miles on the clock I would check the rear driveshaft and u-joints very carefully, I would check the front wheel unit bearings very carefully and I would check the drive belt and tensioner very carefully. Replace anything that is loose or suspect. I would also carry a shorter drive belt that can bypass the air conditioner. I would also check the upper and lower ball joints. After that if anything fails in the front driveshaft or front CV joints they can be disconnected and you can still be on your way but the stuff above usually fails within 200,000 miles and will leave you stranded. 1 tuneup and 1 tranny flush, haha, Id be terrified to touch it. Something may give when its serviced haha.  Its cool to see 203k tho. Im impressed, good to know theyll last. |

If you're going to Mexico, remember armor and when you see the cast of Mad Max out in the desert, plenty of skinny pedal. |

Making a "special run?" Picking up a package?  Just kidding. Replace everything fluids. Everything that is known to breakdown due to wear and tear. Anything that carries said fluids, made of rubber - HOSES. What's the status/age of the battery? Brake pads? Spark plugs? New driver's seat?

Minimum................. -Spark plugs -PCV valve -serp belts + tensioner -coolant flush -trans flush -Power Steering flush -Brake fluid flush -Front/Rear diff service -T-case service -T-stat -Upper/lower radiator hoses -Radiator cap That is just to start,needs a very good inspection to find all the other issues.Plan on setting aside at min $2000+ for this(if your doing some/most of the work yourself),you have severely neglected your vehicle and you will alot of worn items that need to be replaced to make it safe to drive(for others sakes). Oh and most of all listed above requires specific fluids like ATF+4 and HOAT coolants. |

I think i'd be afraid to change much without have time to run it before a road trip. I had a 88 dodge ram 50 that smoked like crazy, burnt oil constantly so, I never changed the oil I just added too it. Two days after an oil change it lost compression. I say run it til it dies and leave it for the lost crew to pick over for parts. I got dibs on the front diff. |

awesome... it gives me a place to start now...lots of options hmmm thinking twice about takin it to mexico now...that trip is supposed to be this winter...so i have some time to tinker... glad to see people have a sense of humor on this forum...

Gonna start out with changing differential oil. Recommendations for weight? Also U joints and Ball Joints. Advice..? Hopefully all this weekend.

Not sure your Mexico Road Trip plans, but Durangotang did an EPIC trip down south... viewtopic.php?f=53&t=45301 That'll show you some of the stuff he had to deal with at least.... might give you some head's up on new "to-dos" before you go. |
