I had to jump my jeep twice today but when I got my Battery tested and my alternator and starter tested they all checked out ok. The last time i had to jump my jeep i noticed that the belt was slipping and smoking over the clutch on the AC compressor. Can the clutch locking up keep my jeep from starting and can i replace just the clutch and not the whole compressor? |

I have seen many V8's and diesels die when the AC was turned on with a locked up compressor. |

I had a '99 Dodge Ram with a 318. It sat in the driveway for about 2 years, but was started at least once a month. I never used the A/C and forgot about that little detail when I went to use it for a trade in for my wifes CR-V. The dealer rep came over to look at it and was pretty impressed at the condition it was in and how well the engine ran...until he turned the climate control to A/C - yup, you guessed it - the engine died instantly! He wasn't so impressed after that, LOL |

Both of the jeep deals here have told me that the clutch is part of the comperssor and can't be replaced on its own. They want 1100 parts and labor.

I just replaced the clutch. Really wanted to do it myself but since I was short on time before a vacation and had never done it I took it to my mechanic. It actually took him a day of looking before finding the parts. He said the same thing that the dealers didnt want to sell him just the clutch. I guess he finally convinced one of them to sell it to him. I did find the clutches on Ebay. Some people are scared of what comes across ebay but that is the only place I found that you could buy it. And it was cheap. |

The repair shop that I used couldn't find a clutch only, but didn't quit there. They found the same clutch was used on some model from Ford and purchased the clutch from the Ford dealer. It does takes very special tools as the magnetic ring is pressed on. The mechanic was a smart guy and the clutch alone was just over a hundred bucks or so. Unfortunely I dont know what the specifics of the Ford clutch was. This work was done on a 2006 Liberty gasoline engine. I am sure it was found searching cross references. |
