Post subject:  2000 Cherokee & carfax?

Hi guys,

We're thinking of ditching our other car. What do you guys know about used 2000 Cherokees? It's a 4x2 (sorry), 6 cylinder automatic sport with 73k miles. That's really all the info I have on it. Anyone able/willing to run a CarFax check on it? VIN#1J4FT48S7YL220335.

Feel free to move this post. It's still a Jeep so it's not quite off topic.

my mom has a '91 cherokee 4x2 with just over 111,000 miles on it and it still runs good (same 4.0 L 6 cyl engine). mario says those engines will run forever. i say go for it :)

I'd love to get a 4x4, but this one's not for me. Seems kinda sad to have a 2wd Jeep, but I'm not the one paying and it won't be used offroad. Polly, good to know thank you. I didn't want us to look into it more if the 2000's are known to have any certain reoccuring problems. Thanks again. Anyone else?

Looks sweet. Have you asked the seller if they would split the cost of the Car Fax? If it is from a dealer, they may already have it. Shame on it not being a 4x4, but at least that will keep the mods focused on the KJ.
Ditto what was said on the 4.0L, not uncommon for them to go 300k miles easy. Shoot an email or pm to MJR, Mike and ask if that partuclar yr/model has any known issues. Mike knows his Cherokees.

I had a take home model year 2000 4x2 Jeep Cherokee just like that one, except white, when I was an engineer for a private water company. If you do a lot of driving it's the way to go!

Slightly better fuel mileage and you still have the ground clearance of the 4x4 models with less maintenance. With good A/T tires they do really good for mild off-roading - I did construction inspection.

I would jump on it as long as the history checks out as the 4x2 is hard to find (at least out here). You have to be careful about the Hurricane Katrina cars. Is it the original owner?

Plus, if you like yellow, you are basically searching for a needle in a haystack as they are VERY hard to find.

Here is a link to the FREE Lemon Check for CARFAX, it also tells you how many transactions/alerts have occurred on the VIN - this one only has had 3. Usually the bad ones are 10 to 25 or more.

Since you live in a warmer climate, a 4x2 is probably a good choice since it won't be going off-road. Fewer mechanical items to break and deal with compared to 4x2.

I would still say to avoid the 4x2 if possible. If you are ever planning on going somewhere where there could be snow, mud, or anything adverse at all, RWD is not fun. I had to spend close to 30 minutes shoveling and pushing a 4x2 cherokee out of a parking space in < 8" of snow. Little front wheel drive sedans were just driving out with just a little push. The Cherokee is a heavy vehicle, and only being able to power it from the back is asking for trouble. What's the point in driving a jeep if you're more likely to get stuck than a nissan sentra? (or a minivan).

Granted, you are in CA, so you won't see all that much snow - but it's not all that long a drive to the mountains, and you do not want to be near moujntains in a RWD-only jeep.

Must of had crappy tires. Why drive a 4x2 jeep? You get high ground clearance with all heavy duty components. You get the bullett proof I-6 engine. Great towing ablility, way more cargo capacity, and as I stated earlier, the 4x2 is EXCELLENT offroad with good tires. I drove one for 4 years doing construction inspection in the worst mud AND snow. You can't compare it to a nissan sentra or minivan.

The one I helped push looked very stock. It was a normal parking lot and the snow was maybe 6-8" with some ice. Rear tires would just fill with snow and spin, and it was too heavy to push effectively. Once it's moving, I'm sure it's fine, but when you only effectively have ONE wheel moving a truck that big, you're bound to find situations when it will spin + the jeep will slide. It took a lot of pushing just to get it moving, and we had to help push it all the way up the hill, too. This same parking lot I was able to just drive around with no problems in 4WD with stock tires.

Of the vehicles we had to push out, the only one worse than the 2wd cherokee was a RWD sedan, because it had the low clearance problem combined with the one-wheel-drive from the rear. The saturn suv was close to as bad as the cherokee, but it was front wheel drive, so it was easier to get moving. The easiest vehicle was a Nissan Sentra FWD. (Well, ok, the easiest vehicle that had to be pushed at all - my jeep just drove out of the spot with no shoveling or pushing at all.)

I'm not sure why FWD is that much better than RWD...Some say that it's the weight over the driving wheels (in which case, we should have stood on the bumper of the cherokee). Some believe the fact that you can turn the driving wheels helps, since you can go side-to-side if needed, wheras a RWD can only just go straight until it starts moving, and even then, the driving wheels can't turn as sharply as a FWD can.

But in any case, 4WD makes up for what RWD lacks. You may not ever need it, but it's nice to have 4WD there when you do. It's not that much more money to get one, and if you hardly ever use it, it's not going to wear out fast. But that one time you really need it, you'll be glad it's there.

Actually, that's the other way around. The Cherokee is a very light vehicle, and rear wheel drive is asking for trouble because it can't sink down and dig in for traction.

I love yellow cherokees! I would go to a cherokee forum and ask them?

"If you are ever planning on going somewhere where there could be snow, mud, or anything adverse at all..."

Well that's what the KJ's for! This would be the driving around town running errands Jeep. Think of how easy it would be to spot the yellow at the mall!

So if you buy it and I find myself (and any other LOST members visitng Cali) in Cali and I see a yellow Cherokke at the mall, make sure you leave hand prints all over it or write "Wash Me" on it.

It's not just a yellow cherokee, it's a yellow cherokee Freedom. Is that some subtle cosmic hint that it should be ours and park next to my Freedom?

Nanette.............I have a 1998 2wd Cherokee for my work vehicle.....it has almost 150,000 miles on it and runs excellent!!!!! Its a GREAT vehicle.....and I actually prefer the 2wd for my work vehicle, its lighter (no transfer case) less parts to maintain/repair, etc. etc..............If the Cherokee checks out......Go for it......they are GREAT vehicles......AND...its still a Jeep :)

It's a cool Jeep but for $8250 we're thinking no. It's in pretty good shape inside and out, some flares are a pulled away from the body a little and there's a vibration when you hit 55. To me it'd look better for less. Is that an average price or a rip?
