I just read a interesting article that informed me most Insurance companies do not cover lifted vehicles. So before you pay thousands of $$ in damages to someone else because your insurance won't you may want to check! When obtaining insurance it's extremely important to notify the agent of modification's to your rig, and is your responsibility to read the coverage supplied to make sure it is what you need. Most companies will supply a (rider) it's a supplemental coverage plan that, yes, it cost more but should the bad stuff happen you will be covered instead of shocked! :?

The main reason they want to be notified of modifications is so they can adjust the value of your vehicle. That way if it is stolen or wrecked and you claim you had $20,000 worth of modifications they know ahead of time. I doubt a 2 inch lift is going to affect the value of my KJ, or raise my premiums, but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask.

recently changed insurance companies. one of the questions they did ask was "Has the vehicle been modified, altered or customized, including engine; interior roll cage; ground clearance; or tires?"

probably mainly for the Japanese vehicles but i'll check with them and notify them when i lift. then if they ask why i'll link them the russian mudding video :P

Coverages will vary from state to state. I work in the collision industry in Virginia, and we see alot variations from carrier to carrier as well. Here is an example... I just had a Subaru WRX in my shop. The owner had converted the car to a WRX STI. We're talking engine, trans, interior, brakes ect. He also did some body modifications, aftermarket air dam and on & on. When HIS insurance carrier came to look at the car, they checked his policy to see if he had notified them of the changes/alterations. He had not. This left him with having to pay all of the differences in the parts and labor costs. Not a good day for the ol' check book. I checked with a contact of mine and found out that he would have been covered in full if he had this addition to his policy... only $25.00 per renewal :( .

One other point I'd like to make is that if his car was damaged due the fault of someone else, he would have been covered in full. In that case he is making a claim against someone elses policy - therefore he is not bound by this limitation.

Once again, this varies from state to state and by the insurance carrier !!!

They only asked about a nitrous system or stereo upgrades when I got my policy on my T-bird.

I'll have to double check with em when I lift it though.

A lifted vehicle pretty much eliminates any possibilty of bumper-to-bumper contact in an accident, resulting in uneccesary
body damage (especailly at low speed).
Unless, of course, the other vehicle is also lifted :o

Just called my insurance company, USAA, and they said that I'm still covered with modifications, no reporting requirements either. They said the only states I wouldn’t be covered in would be in Massachusetts and one other, don’t recall, possible Maryland, and that’s just if I bought it there, since my policy was purchased in California then I'm still covered, even if I go driving through those states.

Joe, good to know about the coverage! Here's some additional info: if you want USAA to cover the mods, you have to have them listed and on the policy. I found out the hard way!!
