Here's another newbie question about my '07 Liberty. I'm going through the owner's manual, learning about basic stuff and I'm stumped. The drawing shows the Automatic Transmission Dipstick handle immediately to the right of the Engine Oil dipstick, right next to that huge tube coming from the air filter. It says to check the level, and if it's low, to add fluid directly into the dipstick tube. In real life, there is nothing there. I can't find the dang thing! The closest I can figure is a thin tube rising up next to the firewall, about 8" back from where I expected to find the dipstick. However, it's capped by a small black cap that seems pretty securely attached, and that reads "For Dealer Use Only". What am I missing? Please advise. |

While we're on the topic of basic maintenance and repairs, what manual do you guys suggest: Haynes or Chilton's? The little owner's manual is woefully lacking. |

You have to go to the dealer to have your trans fluid checked.Chrysler took away the trans dipsticks because idiots kept putting in the wrong fluid and burning up the trans. They use a special dipstick and the Star Scan(for trans temp) to determine fluid level now. And no putting a '06 dipstick tube in will not work as you will have the wrong level and still burn up the trans even with the correct fluid(which is ATF+4 only). |

They should have re-engineered their owner's manual then. I hate when dumb people make my life more complicated. Good to know. I'll delete that one from the handy maintenance schedule I'm making for myself. So that leads me to the obvious next question. . . how often should I plan on taking it in? Or is it a matter of not worrying about it until I notice a symptom of improper shifting, etc?

BTW. . . I love your jeep, TJ !! Yours, and the other sweet lifted rides I've seen since signing onto this forum the other day, have really inspired me to fall in love with my own jeep! Someday, when I finish school and have the $$ to make improvements, I plan to lift it, make it at least moderately trail-worthy, and repaint it olive green with black on the bottom, like TJ's yellow 2-tone jeep. I'll never do anything like Rubicon, but I think I want to get off road someday and enjoy what my home state of Michigan has to offer. And what my KJ has to offer! Thanks guys. |
