Im 16, but i pay for my own gas- so i drive like a grandma. I pop it into nuetral on downhills, keep it under 2000 rpms, dont have it in 4wd often, and have stock tires but i get about 14 mpg. Any suggestions? Id be more than happy with even 17 or 18...

1st do not ever drop it in "N" going down hill as you will consume more gas then by leaving it in gear and enjoy the benifits of the PCM cutting off the injectors so no gas is used.Like yellocoyote stated a good tune up may be needed like spark plugs and PCV valve. One big factor is your "driving like a grandma",that is the #1 killer of mpg's in mordern fuel injected engines and it promotes heavy carbon buildup in the intake and throttle body so professional fuel induction cleaning(before any spark plug change) will do wonders and no they are not a scam and no seafoaming and putting a cleaner in the gas tank is not the same thing. You need to "blow the cobwebs out" at least once a week, get on the stupid peddle pretty hard for 30-60mins each week will actually do wonders for your mpg's in the long run as it blows out alot of built up carbon.

I just replaced the spark plugs about 2 months ago when i got a new spring for the #2 cylinder. And i pop it in N all the time, Ive always been told it helped- Ill stop doing that. And I just take a long time getting up to speed, ill be sure to use the gas a little harder from now on. Should be fun

Thank y'all for the quick reply's. i guess the advice my dads friend has been giving me is a little outdated hah

Very outdated info,it's called "fuel cut-off".The old days of carbed engines the "N" trick would work but hurts your mpg's in a modern multiport FI engine.

Just drive normally and you will be fine, also if it's mostly city driving 14mpg's is not all that bad in a KJ.

removing your air dam probably hurt you - if you can put that back on that will help - not sure how much but if you do a lot of highway driving it's probably worth it.

tire pressure - keep them inflated - I think stock tires called for 33 psi - make sure all 4 are even and check them often.
synthetic fluids everywhere - engine, transmission, axels, T-case
get rid of any extra weight inside the Jeep that you don't need.
Use cruise control as often as possible. If you don't have it be as steady as you can on the gas and anticipate braking by letting off the gas.
Don't tailgate.
Don't speed - above 55 your mpgs decrease. Above 65 they really decrease.
Remove cross rails/roof basket if you have them.
Don't use your AC unless you are doing highway speeds. Keep in mind that using the vent on the floor setting also uses the AC compressor - so if you use the vent only use the upper/chest setting.

Depending on your trip profiles, between 14 and 16 may be somewhat normal. The KJ gets pretty bad gas mileage on very short trips at slow speeds (35 and under), especially when the vehicle doesn't have time to warm up. During the winter when I have to drive my daughter to school 14 to 15 isn't that uncommon. But I can still get 21 miles per gallon on a long roadtrip.

Make sure your tires are inflated and alignment is good. Rolling resistance is the biggest killer at slow speeds. And what tjkj said on downhill runs, no need to pop to neutral. It doesn't make any difference.
