I personally think those 'cold air intakes' are pretty worthless. The tuner crowd likes them because they look and sound cool but that is about the extent of their benefits. The best air intake on almost all stock or mildly modified vehicle is the one it came with from the factory. They have big plumbing, a large airbox and filter element, and draw their air from a cool, high pressure point in the vehicle like behind a headlight or front fascia opening. Those aftermarket intakes have very small filters that need frequent changes and have a tendancy to allow more crap into the engine. The term 'cold air intake' is a misnomer also. These pipes draw their air from the engine compartment right over the top of the motor which is not a good place to find a cool air supply.

The KJ stock airbox is a very nice one. It is nice and big, has a very large filter, and draws it's air from the highest possible point at the front of the vehicle for a good cool air supply that can handle deep water. In the case of sucking water into the forward intake the box is designed so that the water will fall to the bottom and drain off while the engine side takes it's air from the highest point in the box itself as an additional measure to keep water out of the engine. The ductwork is additionally tuned to keep it quiet. If you want more airflow out of your air intake check into a drop in serviceable filter like a K+N filtercharger or better yet change your paper element very often and keep the box and ductwork clean.

The K&N filter is the only good thing, the rest is junk! your going to pay around $150-200+ for a good air intake sys., not $40.00.The filter alone cost that much. waddy whiteguts ^ is also right on the money.

So just replacing the stock paper rectangular intake with the same sized K&N filter would be a better choice?

K&N or Air Hog filter?

If you want a cool sucking sound and got the money get a K&N cold air intake, if not the K&N replacement will work about the same but no cool sucking sound like before you was married.

Unless you are making a dragster out of your KJ your stock box with a K+N drop in replacement filter would be the best way to go for most bang for the buck and best performance. They are an oiled gauze type filter. They cost about $50-70 and need to be washed and re-oiled occasionally. I think K+N recommends you do this every 100,000 miles with normal use, more often in dusty conditions. I'd clean it more often personally. The danger of these filters is if you over oil them you can screw up your MAF sensor by coating it with oil.

You wont get a real big gain in performance though, it will be about like changing from a dirty filter to a clean one.

Ill probably stick with the 10 dollar paper filters

a true cold air intake makes the most horsepower because it flows more air based on the fact the air is more dense at lower temps. The more air you get into the motor, along with more fuel, the more power you get. A cold air intake makes noticeable more power then a drop in K&N. I know from experience.

On the same note it is NOT a cold air intake if it draws air from within the engine bay. A true cold air intake would be under the car or somewhere similar. This is why tuning companies like Vishnu don't recommend them for the street, one puddle and it's all over.

I say since this is propably going off road, the stock box and K&N filter is your best bet. I didn't notice any power gains with mine, but I picked up 25 miles per tank (18 gallon tank). Which means the filter pays for itself in a short time. If you have a CRD-skip the K&N as its a waste of money on a turbo diesel.

Snorkel!

I bought one of those. I honestly couldn't see how it fit on the KJ unless I took the plastic box off the intake (that covers the mass airflow sensor). So I cut it and made it fit. I like it. I mean I paid 20 w/shipping, and that was basically for the shiny polished aluminum tube. It seems to suck more air than stock. However, I will not take it offroad near water, and the biggest problem with these cheap kits is no heat shield. Like ManicMechanicJoe said, it's shielding the filter from heat or taking air from a colder source that makes these work. Take a good look at the K&N kit, and note what the shield looks like. If you can fab up a heat shield, and you got the kit with the K&N filter, you'd probably save some money. You get what you pay for, I just couldn't swing $200+ for it. If you really want the K&N, $194 for a new one on ebay is the cheapest price I've seen. And if your Liberty likes water, the stock intake is the best bet. Unless you want to build a snorkel...

If you must, this will work better and cheaper than all the others:

http://www.thefergusons.us/kj/kj.htm

The others ain't junk, they are "decoration"

The term Cold air started in the 60's and was exactly what it said. They rigged up coffee cans with dry ice on the intake for drag racing.

Since then, "Thugs" think just adding a filter & tube makes "Cold air"... Most of the folks that believe that crap "fast & furios" crowd don't even have a high school diploma, much less a handle on the technical aspects of "cold air"

But hey, I'd sell to them...$$$$$

Not a rose colored post is it.

i put on a Rusty's Air Tube, which simply serves as an adapter to fasten a K&N cone filter to the factory air "plenum", for lack of a better term. the filter is around $45, and the tube was around 25 or 30 from what i remember. in fact, im headed outside to clean off the filter!

Put a AC Delco replacement paper filter in the stock box and smile. You have the best there is for the KJ.

YOU GET 25 MPG!??!?!?! Just by adding a drop in? How do you drive the KJ? I am getting under 15 MPG!!!!!

LOL Ferg. I like your "drop in" filter. Did you notice the shipping those guys were charging? $99 buy it now +30-45 S&H....

It looks shiny, but it has another glaring problem besides the loss of the protective airbox, it also is unprotected from the hot air under the hood. Most of the air that it will be sucking will be much warmer than the air your stock airbox pulls from the front of the KJ. I'm betting that any horspower gain from freer flow will be lost due to the increase in the temp of the air that it pulls in.
