What is this thing, rubber piece in front grille?

On my liberty, I have a rubber piece in the front grille on the passenger side that is cracked open in a couple different areas. Any idea what this is and what it's for? I'll get pictures if needed but it might be a while til I can get them.

Without seeing a pic I'm somewhat guessing here, but is it the piece that is right by the headlight assembly?

If so, I believe it is a protective piece of rubber to keep out what you don't want in the engine compartment and if I'm not mistaken (without being right in front of my JEEP now) it has an opening that has an X cut into it right?

This is where folks have been running their custom LTT cold air intake after removing said rubber piece.

I'm not sure exactly what other functions this provides, it might be somewhat of a matter of just "hiding" the things behind it.

Yes it sits right next to the headlight. So I am assuming all of these have any X in it? Because someone's picture either here or on KJcountry showed this piece and their's was solid looking(no X cut.) I'll try finding that picture.

Edit: Found it. Black rubber thing near passenger headlight.

I don't know if they "all" have the X, but mine's an 03' Limited and it DOES have the X.

I wish. I don't have tow hooks yet. That was some random photo I pulled so you could get the idea of what I was talking about. :-)r
