Went to the mechanic the other day to get a engine, tranny, front & rear differential oil/fluid changes. Picked up the Liberty yesterday and paid $1,521 in total. :banghead: :furious: When he took the rear differential cover off, one of the gears were stripped and metal pieces were all over. The mechanic showed me all the pieces and we have no idea how it happened. He had to replace the entire slip differential since they don't just sell the gear alone. Whenever I used to take turns my wheels always screeched and wondered why and now the screeching is gone. I hope not to have any future problems with either the rear end or tranny since this is my second tranny on this Liberty. So far the ride is very smooth but I do hear some humming at times...not sure if it's the tranny or what.

Are you running in 2WD, Full Time, or Part time all of the time?

I'm always running in 2WD unless we have very heavy rain & snowfall then I put it in 4WD.

4WD is not really needed in the rain unless you're running on dirt roads. You should still have enough solid road contact unless you're hydroplaning. This may or may not have contributed to the problem with your Limited Slip, however there is a lot of negative discussion on the forums concerning Chrysler's Trac-Loc Limited Slip, do a search on the subject and I'm sure something about it will come up.....

I do remember some times where I used 4WD on the highway during heavy downpours because of hydroplaning. Maybe I should just slow down so I don't need to use 4WD on smooth pavement.

Mine is an '05 with the offroad package, and my rear end pops and makes awful noises. It shakes the Jeep when it pops. I think the rear differential is going to be toast soon. 89,000 miles and counting...

People always talk trash about the Dana 35, but I have beaten the crap out of D35s and have seen them beaten the crap out of with large offroad tires and I never once have seen a D35 fail on or off road. The Chrysler 8.25 and 9.25 axles on the other hand...
